Default PT 11 upgrade to 2020 - install/HD setup advice?

Hi Guys,

About to purchase/install PT 2020.

What's the best way for me to keep/store my PT 11.3.0 and then install run PT 2020?

I currently have 3 HDs (one for OS and programs, one dedicated for PT sessions and one for downloads/storing stuff.

Do I uninstall PT11? Or just move it? and move everything PT 11 or just certain files? or?

And then importing old sessions into 2020 - do I move them? Or just open them for the first time and PT 2020 is cool?

Thanks!

PT11 and PT2020 require different OS, so first thing you need to upgrade your OS. Compatibility info here. PT11 session will open in PT2020 just fine.

Ah - yep, will need to do that (hadn't thought about Win 10 damn it!).

Hopefully goes smoothly :)

Thanks.

Windows 10 is up and running no problems.

Looking to install PT2020 this week.....

Do I just uninstall PT11? Ive got all my drives backed up etc.

There's nothing I should keep on my pc/PT 2020 is a complete fresh install from what I can see.

Ideally when doing brain surgery like this you would have done a full clean install of Windows 10 on a spare partition or new drive and not an in-situ upgrade. Do an install of Pro Tools, ILM and driver installs on that new OS install and test and then and reinstall all your plugins using the latest/current installers, testing as you go. This also means you have a way to quickly roll back/recover if you screw up.

And especially since Pro Tools 11 is not supported on Windows 10... even if I thought upgrading Windows in-situ was a good idea I would have uninstalled Pro Tools 11 before doing that upgrade. You are now hoping that the uninstaller for Pro Tools 11, not supported on Windows 10, runs OK on Windows 10. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. I'd not want to make myself that lab rat.

It may still make sense to go that full clean install route... or just try uninstalling 11 and install 2020 and see if it seems to work. But then you need to check and update any old plugins etc. For all that effort I'd rather do major upgrades like this properly.... and if you run into any problems we are likely going to tell you to go back to the start and do that anyhow :-O

Thanks Daryl - I appreciate the input.

Yep, a clean install of everything makes sense.

I actually found the Win 10 upgrade idea/route in a thread on here so went with it...sounds like not the absolute best method but hopefully ok I suppose!

Thanks again.

+million. Many kind of random problems ahead when you do OS upgrade. Wiping the system drive clean is the only way.

Got it loud and clear guys :)

Sounds like total wipe and install is the go, was hoping to avoid reinstalling everything and read (quite possibly erroneously!) that the update from 7 to 10 was an ok method.

Hmmmm...might try PT2020 and see what happens and can then go completely fresh if any probs.

I just want Arturia Spark to work so I can finish a couple of projects damn it haha. (I was running Win 7 and PT 11.3.0 with no probs for ages up until a few weeks ago).
