Didn't read too much, but if it's similar to Waves' cloud license system, I'd be all for it. That system works well.

Good idea in theory. But notice that they are suggesting that software developers sell the ability to have an ilok cloud license as an "upgrade". That's some BS right there. Seeing as there are many companies who still are not on board with allowing licenses to be activated on a host computer, I highly doubt that they would be inclined to go with the cloud option.

Same and same.

I just hope they don’t go crazy like Native Instruments and won’t allow any offline activity

Many people work on offline computers....and actually like it that way. Myself included.

hi, this is interesting .. this does not appear to be Host Computer Authorization .. just Cloud .. what happens if you lose your internet connection due to several reasons ..

1) power outage (and you have no backup PS)
2) working in the field (away from internet)
3) iLok is doing Maintainence to their Site (when "They" think no one will be affected)
4) iLok has any sort of outage
5) your internet provider has issues
6) all of the above !!!

would our iLok's become a backup to the Cloud ?? so if any of these scenarios happen we have instant backup ??

It'd be interesting to know how many networks / broadcasters are currently using Avids subscription option - and how many will adopt it in the next 4 years.

There's still going to be movie studios refusing to host their raw media online, but for many other content creators - if the software requires an active internet connection, and the raw media is stored on the cloud ; it's a no brainier to have all the other licenses accessed in the same way.

Of course, it would be prudent to have an adequate number of offline systems, for the inevitable occasions that technology farts in your face.

Anybody remember when they put out their local(on the computer)iLok License manager vs the old website-based authorizations system? Hopefully, it won't be a nightmare as it went the last time!!

I don't know how the rest of the network does things, but speaking only for our particular station the rule of thumb is "If it's working, don't screw with it!" There has to be a REALLY compelling reason to upgrade. Since modifications are considered something to be avoided unless absolutely necessary, the concept of ongoing payments for continuous upgrades doesn't really fit our operating model.

NI is weird - the old Service Center can be made to work offline but it's a pain in the butt. Native Access is totally online and NI has been asked multiple times to make it work offline but the response is crickets. Don't forget that there are some products that won't authorize/etc. via Native Access and you have to use Service Center.
