Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
Hello,
I have a Mix Plus system on My G4 in my studio running on OS 9.2 (will be upgrading to OS X and PT 6 soon) and I want an Mbox system for home to record on my Windows XP computer. Can I take an XP session that was recorded with the MBOX at home, and take it to my studio and work on it with a Mix Plus system on a Mac?? I would keep all the parameters the same like bits and kHz etc. Is anyone doing this? Thanks.

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
yes, it works fine. just make sure you check "enforce mac/pc compatibility" when you create sessions. we've started using bwav files exclusively to allow easier swapping as well.

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
Thanks Slinky!
Will it work both ways? Can I bring sessions from my Mix Plus (on a Mac) session home and work on them in my Mbox on XP? What about compatibility between different versions of Pro Toos LE (for XP) and Pro Tools for OS 9 and OS X ( I am currently on OS 9.2 at my studio with PT version 5.?)? Thanks again for your info! Karen

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
Yes you can swap LE to TDM sessions even if they are going Mac to PC or PC to Mac. As long as the session was created with the "enforce PC/Mac Compatiblity" option enabled. You shouldn't have problem with the different Protools versions either. The only thing is that; say you have a 64tracks Mix Plus session and try to open it on your Mbox, you will only be able to playback 24 tracks (or 32with the beta version) on your MBOX. You can select witch of the 64 tracks you want to playback and switch those around, but you won't be able to playback all of you TDM tracks at once on your Mbox
But makes senses..... Hope that helps Boom Chic-great name

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
Karen,
Yes, it works both ways. Here's an example. I recorded a project into my Powerbook/Mbox rig running 6.1. A friend I work with opened it and did some editing on his XP/Mbox rig running 6.1. We then saved it and opened it at work on 2 different G4/MixPlus rigs with 5.1.3. It finally landed on my HD on 6.1 rig to be finished. Everything was intact. All the plug-ins translated from PC to Mac. As for different versions of Pro Tools....you do NOT have to downsave 6.1 sessions in order for them to open in 5.1 and all 5.1 sessions open right up in 6.1. Just make sure you always have PC/Mac compatibility checked and your good. |

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
Great! Thanks!
Now, what storage media do you use to go from home to studio and back again? Could I use my OWC firewire drive on both the XP and Mac systems? Should I burn a CD or DVD? How do you get your sessions from one system to the other? thanks again for all the quick and informative replies!! Karen

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
That's a good question. You should be ok with a Firewire drive. I don't think you;ll be able to get all you need onto a cd? If your dealing with sessions smaller than 700mb, than a cd will work. DVD's will be bigger, but if your talking about video and audio files, you'll need something with lots of room. If your firwire drive can be read by PC's and Mac your fine. Firewire is pretty portable, I can take my Lacie d2 anywhere.

Re: Have a Mix Plus, want an MBOX for home on XP?
Hi, two things...to reply to an earlier post that mentioned XP only having 24 tracks (32 w/ beta version). That is incorrect. The XP version has always had 32 tracks.
Second, with ver. 6 on XP (and on OSX) you can open the TDM/HD sessions that have more than 32 tracks and see all all of them, but you will only be able to hear the top 32 tracks in the edit window. LE now works like kind of like a sampler where you have 32 voices...you can have more than 32 tracks, but you can only have 32 audio regions[files] playing back at once. And to answer your question about Mac->PC->Mac external hard drives. This is a tricky one. I have several dual USB2.0/Firewire external hard drives. On the PC I use USB 2.0 and on the mac I use firewire. Even though Mac OSX is supposed to be able to read FAT32 formatted drives, I've had trouble mounting them. So i eventually just bought MacOpen for my PC so it can read HFS+ formatted drives and I haven't had a problem since. You could also get a firewire card for your PC if you wanted to use a firewire only drive.

i second MacOpen. that's what we used when we hooked my OWC firewire drive up to the XP machine.

I guess it's called Macopener not Macopen. Looked it up on Google. Just to clarify.
