Other than clearing the selection, the down arrow "marking the in" position can be handy for setting a new play location while rolling (maybe when you hear the top of a new cue, or verse, or a new song in a long-form live recording, or similar).
I use the "Clears the Selection" aspect of it after I think i'm done tweaking a clip or selection. I can hit that down arrow switch to put the play cursor at what had been selection start, then hit Play and roll from there to listen one more time and not have playback stop when it hits any selection end. One other cool thing about the down arrow switch in the default v2.0 soft keys is that if you hold Shift when pressing that down arrow switch, it "Restores Last Selection," so you can always go back to the selection you were tweaking if you want to.
