Default Playback Engine Error

Hi all,

Just installed PT (for Windows) for the first time and am an absolute novice.

- After loading "Kelly Malone - Earth and
Stars.ptx" (from the "Pro Tools 11.0 Demo Session"
folder), I get this error message:

"The current playback engine does not support a
sample rate of 44.1 kHz"

Online searches lead to this solution:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...oting/en376031

..."Pro Tools will report this message when a session
is open and an external digital clock is connected
with a different sample rate than that of the session.
Manually switch the Clock Source to "Internal" in the
Hardware Setup window.

Or, exit Pro Tools, set the external clock source to the
correct sample rate, and then reopen the session."

➡️ Haven't been able to do any clock adjusting of any
kind...and Avid customer support is unavailable at the moment.

Tried searching these forums, but wasn't able to find anything.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, welcome to the community.

I must admit this is the first time anyone is suggesting sampling rate of 44.1kHz i not supported. Perhaps someone else knows what is going on...

Do you have Windows set to use the audio interface you're using or want to use for PT? It's possible that something else has grabbed the interface and won't let go. What audio interface are you using?

Have a look at this thread.

On Windows, unless your interface drivers allow it - most don't - you need to go to Control Panel>Sound and make your onboard soundcard the default for Windows sounds/audio in the Playback and Record Tabs and disable any other interface listed.

Best practice is also to run PT as Administrator.

BTW, what is your interface?

No special equipment involved other than the laptop and the built-in speakers...

I looked through the sound settings but it wasn't clear what, if anything could be changed to resolve the error...

Your problem is Windows is also using the built-in audio interface and won't let go to PT. You really need a separate interface and monitor speakers.

If you have a windows machine then you’re going to have to learn to be proficient in troubleshooting it and worst of all Windows changing drivers and messing things up for you. I just helped someone with this issue. Turned out that a recent windows update changed the audio driver and also changed the setting where multiple programs could access the sound card simultaneously. Try rolling back your sound card driver, but don’t click “search the web for driver” when it asks. Click on the other option something like “open locally” or something along those lines. Then choose the last compatible driver and see if that helps. In the driver properties page there’s also a checkbox for “allow only one application to use at a time” (something along those lines). Uncheck that. Hope this helps. Windows is a nightmare. Long live Mac!

In the window of your third image(sound control panel), click on the Speaker so it's highlighted, click Properties, on the next screen highlight/click conexant hd properties box, in the new box click on change settings and you should be able to set to 44.1 ,16 or 24 bit etc. Note to anyone using sound in windows: plugging an HDMI monitor will cause windows to change default audio output to HDMI automatically so it must be reset manually.

If you have Audio through HDMI capability, go into Device Manager>Sound, video and game controllers and disable the video card's audio capability.

Update: working 🙂

Avid tech support did a remote session.

He uninstalled the system's built in sound driver, which was up to date, reverting it back to a Sep 2018 version.

"ASIO4ALL" sound driver installation was necessary
(but version 2.13 worked, while the latest v2.14 did not)
He then adjusted some settings...

And changed the Playback Engine in PT from Windows Audio Device to ASIO4ALL

Opened the bundled "Kelly Malone - Earth and
Stars.ptx" file and voila...

https://imgur.com/1pQw5Ix

The consensus definitely does seem to be to use an external audio interface - since my only intentions here are to edit and listen back, the default laptop speakers with the help of ASIO4ALL will suffice.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and recommendations.
