Default Fastest G4 for OS9?

Just wondering..... what is the fastest G4 that still supports OS9? I currently run a G4800 quicksilver with a Mix+ and am think about upgrading but would still like to hang on to my old, reliable OS9 configuration.

Thanks!

I have a Dual Boot/ Dual 1.25 Ghz. Think there might have been a dual boot/dual processor at around 1.4 GHz as well. The dual processor won't do you much for you in OS9 but if you decide to upgrade to OS X any time soon it will.

The Dual 1.25 ghz 'Mirrored Drive Door' model is the last version that will boot into OS9. They still have them in the Apple store, though you can find them much cheaper used...

The Dual 1.25 MDD G4 is the fastest Apple that will boot in OS9. You can tell it apart from it's OSX boot-only sibling by the omission of FW 800. I wouldn't recommend a dual boot machine for OS9 PT, but rather stick to the Single 1.25 MDD which is better for PT 5.1. Also, please note that the MDD Macs need quite a bit of software tuning and the right OS9 components to run well. Generally speaking, if you have very little experience setting up your system you might be better off sticking to your Quicksilver. Your QS OS9 can not run on a MDD, since the MDD have never OS ROM and System to access the ATA-100 bus and other components.

I would agree Dual 1.25 is the one to get. The damn thing is noising though ( the fans). I just bought and i got a bad one. I'm getting a pulsing sound out of the sound out. Apple say's it's the power supply or the logic board. If you get one, make sure you test everything right away. If you buy it from the Apple Store you'll be able to exchange it.

Thanks for the response..... I think maybe I'll just stay with the good ole Quicksilver 800 for now. It just works so good! (you know what we say in Texas.... if it ain't broke, don't fix it!)

I have a quicksilver 800 with a Mix Core and DSP farm II and it sometimes gets a little sluggish, but otherwise works great. I have been considering getting a processor upgrade sometime in the near future as the prices on them are always coming down. You may want to investigate this route as an alternative to get a little more mileage out of your computer before the "real" upgrade (to a G5 or G6 or whatever).
A good place to start is xlr8yourmac.com

Consider a processor upgrade... a single 1.4 GHZ should do you well. Buy one that doesn't require any extensions, ie is compatible out of the box.

Good deals at otherworldcomputing.com.

Stick with the Quicksilver. I have a G4 800 w/ 1gb RAM and it rocks. I was starting to think it was time for the HD upgrade (I have mix cube & dsp farm II with Lucid converter). Then I lent my rig to a friend and the results of his mix were fantastic! This is old school Eagles/Stones rock with a proper band and his mixes REALLY rock. Made me think twice about shelling out more money chasing a dream sound.

The equipment is only as good as the person using it!

I am now cursing my friend. I was blaming the equipment for not giving me the sound I was after..............
