5.1 Surround Newbie - Can I pick your brains?
Hi folks,
I've been offered the opportunity to jump into the 5.1 surround mixing arena. I've never mixed in surround, so I have gaps in knowledge that I need to fill. I've Googled surround sound speaker types, placement and mixing until my eyes are bleeding, so now I have a couple of questions to start. Is there a good source (on-line or book) that gives a concise beginner's guide to surround sound mixing. Speaker type, placement and overall mixing techniques. Here's my current speaker inventory 2 Yamaha NS-10's 2 Dynaudio BM-6A's 2 Urei 809's 2 Mackie HR-824 1 JBL Subwoofer All this is hooked into an Amek Media 51 (28-channel input). My PT system is PT TDM 6.2.3, Mac G4 Dual 533Mhz, OS10.3.2, and 3 of the 96io's. OK, I was thinking having the Dynaudio's in front Left and Right, the NS-10's (or maybe the Mackie's) as my two rear speakers, and maybe getting another Dynaudio for my center channel. Would one of the other speakers serve just as well as a center channel, or will the mismatch cause havoc with mixing? Am I completely off-base, or does that make the least bit of sense to you all? I know... I have a lot to learn. That's why I'm here. |
