Default fireface 800 digi 002 setup

Ok here goes...

I just made the switch from digital performer to PT le 7.4(hooray!). I have a fireface 800 and a digi 002 connected via lightpipe and spdif on a mac. I want to use my fireface as my main i/o interface but I just can't my head wrapped around configuring it to give me individual ins and outs into pro tools. My PT hardware setup is clocked to optical via adat at 48kHz. Pro tools is routing all the fireface inputs in as one and preventing me from multitracking. Do I need configure that oh so German matrix in Total Mix?

I'd really appreciate some help on how to setup these interfaces properly.

thanks in advance,
.Ray

</fingers crossed>

A long shot here but, is the optical out on the fireface set for SPDIF? It needs to be set for ADAT. I am not familiar with that unit so I'll just lay out some basic ground rules. Don't attach the fireface to the computer with firewire. Set the fireface to 44.1K or 48K and make your sessions the same sample rate. Go to (in protools) Hardware Setup and select Sync to ADAT. Go (in protools) to the I/O setup page and enable all the ADAT inputs (9-16). Think of the system like this; the 002 is an 18 channel interface to protools. 1-8 are the analog inputs. 9-16 are the ADAT inputs via the lightpipe in(as long as it is set to Optical=ADAT). Inputs 17 and 18 are via the SPDIF input RCA jack. The 002 attaches to your computer via firewire 400. Any other wiring is not needed and could be a problem in getting the basic system to operate. Protools only recognizes inputs thru DIGI hardware (in this case, you 002). Protools will not accept audio from any other source (like the computer's firewire, USB or other audio inputs). If the fireface has the ability to remember mixer settings, you should tell it to be an 8 channel interface that feeds each of the 8 analog inputs to the 8 lightpipe signal paths. If this doesn't help, maybe it will get you thinking in a direction that will.

thanks albee,

I tried our suggestion without success. Although your post gave me more understanding on th PT side of things, I think my problem still lies with the fireface stand alone configuration. Does anyone out there have this setup? I know the two units can coexist nicely with each other.

thx,
.Ray

Ray,

Did you get this worked out? If so how? Another post suggested that the Fireface might be able to sync to the 002 through the ADAT.

The FF800 will sync to my 002...you can run either the ADAT or s/pdif coaxial out from the Digi into the FF. You have to set up the RME prior to this though and then run it in stand alone mode. You set it up as a slave (not master).I did the set-up on another computer so as not to run the risk of driver conflicts with the digi. BTW, I downloaded Reaper to use to check out the FF (it's free to evaluate)....it's a pretty amazing program.
