Default Hybrid 10 HD TDM / 12 Native System

Hey guys,

I've happened into a situation where for about $300 I can be running an HD2 system with 10HD. I'm currently a Zen Studio user, so I'd be using the Digital I/O box and connecting the Zen to that. My thinking was that I'd use the 10 rig for all tracking purposes and then switch over (if need be) to 12 for mixing. I figured I could keep the Zen plugged in USB, so that its ready to go ASIO with 12 and through the ADAT ins and outs for the HD rig. Obviously most of my plugins won't run in 10, hence holding on to a current version as well. Any other pitfalls I'm missing? Anyone else doing something similar, and if so, any problems with a co-install of 10.3 and 12.4 on Windows 7?

Thanks for any advice!

what plugins are you using that won't work with 10? You do realize that it runs both RTAS and AAX?

I know it RTAS and AAX, and TDM I believe. But only 32 bit AAX plugins, and in order to run them on the cards to get near zero latency wouldn't my options be TDM and maybe 32 bit AAX DSP? I don't know of any plugins released recently that offer TDM plugins, or even RTAS for that matter. I use a fair amount of Slate, SoundToys, Fabfilter, Valhalla, UA, Native Instruments, and some assorted odds and ends. Also, I recall TDM licenses being about twice the price of the native versions, if all I have are current native licenses would I even be able to use any TDM stuff?

32 bit AAX DSP plugins will only work with the newer HDX systems under PTHD 10, HD & HD Accel cards use TDM plugins only under PTHD 10. Hope this helps!

Yes, to clarify; AAX-32bit is only for PT10 and TDM is only up to PT10. After that, since PT11, it is AAX-64bit only.

Native and DSP, but still AAX-64bit only. No TDM, no RTAS, no AAX-32bit.

Why are we getting hung up on plugins for his potential workflow. The "only" plugins he even needs for tracking would be just a few and really only a TDM verb.

He can use whatever plugins he wants when he is mixing in Native mode.

Buy a copy of Revibe for less than $200 and one decent channel strip and that's all you really need for tracking through the plugins.
