Default Meeting performance expectations based its cost!

I feel my computer system is not meeting performance expectations based its cost! I'm running PT12 updated to the latest 2020 version on an updated Windows 10 Pro 64-bit platform.

System build:
Motherboard
ASUS. X99-DELUXE II (SOCKET 2011)
CPU
Intel Core i7 5820K @ 3.30GHz (OC ~3.8GHz)
Haswell-E/EP 22nm Technology
Ram
64GB @ 1223 MHz (16-18-18-35) 4 (12Gb x 4) of 8 slots occupied. ~15% memory used.
Graphics
LG ULTRAWIDE CURVED DISPLAY (3440x1440@60Hz)
GIGABYTE NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 4Gb Memory
Storage
Boot (C): Samsung SSD 970 EVO 250GB (M2.2)
User Data (D): Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250GB (M2.2)
DAW Sessions/Music (M): Samsung SSD 970 EVO 250GB (M2.2)
Samples (S): Corsair Force SSD MP500 500GB (M2.2)
Projects (P): 1TB Seagate Firecuda (SATAIII)
System Backup (Z): 4TB TOSHIBA HDWE140 (SATAIII)
Optical Drive: LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM
Audio
System: Realtek High Definition Audio
Master Converter: RME ADI-2 Pro FS (MADIFace)
*Session Converter: UA Apollo X8P (TB3 upgrade soon)

Any suggestions how to evaluate a Windows system in a Pro Tools setup similar to this?

Suggestions on upgrading to Thunderbolt 3. I understand the X99 is not compatible with (or easily converted to) TB3 drivers, i.e., like X299 for example.

Upgrade suggestions (MOBO and CPU) if TB3 is the driving force? I’ve always used ASUS MOBO but I know Gigabyte and ASRock MOBO are popular as well.

Best,

Billy

Default Re: Meeting performance expectations based its cost!

I would take a look through the PC Build Thread to get some idea of what combinations are working for people.

As far as how much computer you need really depends on the size of your sessions, number of plug-ins/VIs and the complexity of the session. It also depends on which plug-ins you use as some take up a lot more resources than others.

For Thunderbolt, I would look for a board that already has it built it. The add in cards seem to cause some issues for people, and there are more boards out there now that already come with TB3.

Before going TB3 though, check with the manufacturer of the interface you will be using. Most interfaces these days still need a TB3 to TB2 adapter and they can tell you which one works best with their hardware.
