Default What I plan to do

I'm going to try to cover everything I want to do and what software and equipment I want to use. I'm also going to ask questions about them.

Let me start by listing the software I would like to use. I want Pro Tools regular, Reason, Guitar Rig, and Waves.

I'd like a drum set, a guitar, a base, mics for the drum set, a mic for vocals, and a rack for the guitar.

I want to use midi, sampling, pitch adjustment, effects, and pitch correction.

Ask questions.

First question: are you serious or what? If you are - read on. If not - go back to Gearslutz and troll on. If you are indeed serious and not a hit-and-run poster post back here and we'll try and help.

You're going to need a bank account as huge as Donald Trump's.

You're also going to need the knowledge to use all this equipment. Have you done any recording before? Do you play any instruments (other than the radio)? None of this is plug and play software or hardware; totally unlike Guitar Hero or Garageband.

It's taken those of us here with studios and musical equipment years to accumulate not only the hardware but also the knowledge to use it all. And we're still learning this. None of us were born knowing this or having unlimited sugar daddy budgets to buy all this. Cost estimates on buying all you want will easily run in the 5 figure (without decimal point) range.

Oh yeah - you also forgot amps for the bass and guitar and keyboards/synths for your mythical studio.

Do you want to record ALL those things at once? If so, you will need an interface with a lot of inputs(Behringer X32, maybe).

You forgot one investment that is of equal importance to many others on your list, and that is acoustic treament(a bad-sounding room will make bad-sounding recordings).

What kind of space do you have for all this stuff(and are you concerned about noise, either coming into your space, or bleeding into other spaces, like the neighbors)?

What's your budget?

AND, perhaps the most neglected and overlooked cost component....cabling.
(you'd be surprised at how it adds up especially if you want quality stuff).

So, I'll reiterate the question Albee asked: What's your budget? I hope for your sake it's large!

Haha I love this thread already!

In reality you could start with 50% of the low number on each point. But the acquisitions never cease, and this is good to know beforehand

Your desired outcome is really what's missing here. You want to record your band?

Don't need a X32. Get a
Focusrite LS56 with octo pre mk3 with dynamics.
Forget bass and GTR amps record straight thru eleven racks.
Forget a Mac Pro and get a new Mac Mini i7

Don't skimp on acoustics and audio cables, nor Mic's buy the most expensive ones u can afford at the time. (I assure you most studios didn't start off with U87's as the first mics they owned)

But pls understand you will spend a lot of money if you want to do it big.

Gentlemen:
I think we're dealing with a troll here in the op who's just trying to stir the pot. Certainly wouldn't put a whole lot of thought into this one.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt. In any case, this information could still be useful for someone who wants to start up and needs some quit guide to what he has to expect and what he should think of to start off.
