Default Question about "bundled 8 LE" to 9 crossgrade. Hardware serial related!

What's up fellas?! On eBay, I am selling the copy of PT8 that came with my 003R. Because I already purchased PT8 when I was on my Mbox 2, I never registered or even opened the 8 that came with the 003. So I put it up on eBay and I got an interesting question from a potential buyer.

What I want to know is, is the product key for this bundled PT 8 in any way linked to my 003 serial number at all? He claims that a tech from sweetwater told him he won't be able to crossgrade to 9 without my serial number, which sounds odd to me. I would think he can use his own hardware serial number. Anyone know for sure?

Here's his exact email:

I am interested in this software, but I do have one concern...
I spoke to the techs at sweet water, and the said that even though the software isn't registered, ...if the the hardware that it was bundled
with is,...I would not be able to register the software and be eligable for the crossgrade to pro tools 9! ....So,...I would need the hardware serial # for a unregistered hardware unit,...is that available?

AFAIK, He can't use your unregistered software to cross-grade as the cross-grade relies on a serial number of hardware(which you still own) If he wants PT9, he should buy PT9. If he wants a deal on PT8, then he should buy your ebay item. Someone correct me if this is nit right

I dont' see why he shouldn't be able to use his own hardware serial number.

But then the question is, why is he trying to buy 8 if he wants 9? Maybe he mistakenly believes that he needs 8 in order to get 9. You may want to ask him about this.

So he can't just use his own hardware serial number?

If he can get my software for around $100 or so, then get the crossgrade for $250, he'll be saving almost $300 off buying the full PT9. This is what makes sense to me at least!

I have a store bought version of PT8. I hope I don't have a problem using that as a crossgrade.

You do not need Pro Tools LE 8 to upgrade. You need a qualified hardware serial number.

If the user has a Mbox 2, Mbox 2 Mini, Mbox 2 Micro, 002-series, 003-series, Mbox 2 Pro, then he is qualified for the crossgrade. He punches in his serial number and gets an iLok asset and access to download the Pro Tools 9 installer (both upgrade and full install versions).

Hi,

ALL you need for the upgrade to PT9 is your hardware serial and an ilok account and thats it.

Technically all versions of PT prior to 9 were bundled with the hardware so the sale of software only wasn't officially allowed!

Anyway you're not selling your hardware so the buyer will not be bale to get an upgrade from your sale! but assumably he has his own hardware otherwise PT8 is useless to him

The bad thing I see with this though is I see a lot of people on eBay selling their interfaces and their serial numbers are pictured. So anyone can easily jot down one of those serial numbers and get themselves a crossgrade and activate it using the eBay serial number.

Yeah, that's not too smart for them to do.
