Default How long does it take your mac to start up?

4 minutes here. Something can't be right

G4 800
HD2/192
Atto SCSI Card
ProControl

Networked to another computer. Everything goes fine (extentions along the bottom etc), then the desktop appears, blank menu bar at the top, frozen clock and no icons for about 3 minutes.

Anyone else experiencing long start up times?

try chucking out your finder prefs, apple menu options prefs, and the servers folder in your system folder. also I know someone who thinks it may be an adobe thing but I have no way of knowing that have you got anything in your start-up items?

if its any consolation mine takes less than a minute to start-up, on 9.2.2 with minimum extensions running PT, Logic and SNS, but if you are on a network it will take longer, 4 minutes is quite a while though, hope that helps

Don't know if this is going to help but I would first try to rebuild the desktop. If that doesn't help I would go to the Chooser and deselect the option to mount any network volumes at boot time (if any are checked). If it's still slow, I would run a drive diagnostic program to check all of your drives and update the drivers on them if they pass the diagnostics.

Ever since OS9 the system does a memory test while starting up. The more memory, the longer it takes.
To bypass this 'feature' go to your control panels folder.
Press [command / option] while opening your memory control panel.
A 'secret' section will appear allowing you to turn off memory test at startup.

Hope this helps.

I think the memory test happens before you get the "happy mac", so if it's taking a long time at the desktop it sounds to me like it's trying to mount volumes.

How fast does it boot if it's not networked to the other computer?

I don't own a ProControl, but is there any way that the ProControl ethernet connection can interfere with networking?

I'd test without the ProControl an additional computer hooked up, then test with either.

Trashing any networking prefs is also a good idea. You might also want to limit the number of shared disks. Also, is it possible that your computer is attempting to establish networking with a computer that's sleeping?

Networking? Look in the system folder and delete anything in the folder called "servers". Then go into the chooser and choose appleshare, and when you connect to the other computers, un check the boxes for search at start up.

If this is it, your computer is searching for hard drives or partitions that no longer exist, at startup.

To speed up the loading of the extensions, try Disk Warrior. Optimizing these files can save you a bunch of time.

If Norton AntiVirus is installed, disabling the "Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect" extension (Extensions Manager Control Panel) also reduces boot time.
