Default 002 - rack and desk firewire board difference?

I have a 002 (desk) with fried firewire connections. On running Protools the "unable to locate digidesign hardware" error message appears.

Today I purchased a replacement 002 (rack) firewire card.

I installed the 002 Rack card in the 002 Desk to test it and yes, Protools opened without any problem.

Only problem is the 002 Rack card is lacking certain components, including fader and display connectivity.

Does anyone know which components I need to transfer from the 002 Desk firewire card to the replacement 002 Rack firewire card to get everything up and going?

Thanks!!!!!

You are not going to swap anything except replace the blown Firewire PHY chip on the dead board with the PHY from the good board. It should be an Agere FW802B.

I am not sure why you purchased a whole board, the FW802B can be found for a few dollars each on eBay and elsewhere.

That assumes you have the equipment and skills to handle doing fine pitch SMT soldering, or can take it some place who can.

Thanks Darryl, that makes sense.

The new board came as a freebie, hence not looking for the part itself.

You might be looking for some more after trying to desolder and resolder that SMC chip.

Yeah, that's why I was thinking that swapping out some of the bigger components from the old board (e.g. fader socket, LCD socket) might actually be easier. I'll have a talk to a friend who can do micro soldering and see what he reckons.

Nope, you'll never test/know what to do or be able to test it. What you want to do is a simple swap of one ~$3 part. Find somebody who can do that, or just buy a used 002 or 003 console. And be careful not to hot-plug the Firewire in future (likely killer of your Firewire port).
