Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
Okion,
I have the Matrox G550 and even with continuous desktop checked the child windows still squish down to being on screen #1 when I close a session and re-open it. But I will check and see if there are any other settings I might be missing. I still feel like there ought to be a way to make this happen. I have some experience with C++ programming so I could look into creating a small app to place the windows. Can't believe there is nothing out there already though. |

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
Hey,
Yes, I meant Matrox not Maxtor. My tech agrees with Okion's explanation. The card is a Matrox G450 I got on Ebay for $35 and am using the latest software and drivers for the G550. More importantly I am intrigued to see what would happen with three or four monitors! Rock On! Tim Traynor Backstage Recording Bishop, CA |

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
I use 2 Sony 17" flat LCDs. I have 2 graphic cards in the machine. Workes FINE, except for the same problem everyone's having whereby you need to reposition the windows upon opening a session. Minor pain given the benefits...

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
Hey Swap
I checked into the code for saving window positions. Its out on the MSDN site. Looks like you will have to know the handles of the windows in the PTLE app. Seems like we may have to wait for digi programing. The functions are described on the Microsoft site search for "Positioning Objects on Multiple Display Monitors" on the MSDN site. Its part of the Windows GDI. Matrox on the other hand claims that the Power Desk software will save and restore the settings. Mike |

I have been able to get the handle for the the main window of PTLE already and position it! Working on the child windows now (mix, edit, etc). This looks possible to me. Swap |

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
Swap,
Cool, would you mind sharing the source when you are done? I think you might have problems consistently positioning the internal windows. But give it a try. If I am not mistaken the reason the matrox works is that XP thinks it's one giant monitor, so the -last position - digi passes is considered valid and left as it is. Where as with duo monitors it tries to fit it to the drivers info on how big the monitor is. The proper place for this to be changed is in the object managing the video cards. So it seems that placing a wrapper there as a driver to fool the OS is the cleanest way to go. I bet M$ does this in the next release. |

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
i know this might sound like a stupid question but can you use two video cards (single monitor type) and would you need the same type or any combination.

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
Okion,
Looks like bradweeks wants to do what you are doing with two video cards. I don't mind sharing. If I come up with anything useful I might ask some to help me test it. Question: Does your PTLE 5.3.1 main window always launch in the maximized mode? I always have to restore it before I can size it across two monitors. I am asking this because it looks like I will have to send a restore command before sizing but I want to find out if this is common or just something on my setup. Thanks, Swap |

Re: How many here using Dual Video Monitors ???
Bradweeks
I used two different cards for a while and it worked fine. One was a agp ati card and the other was a pci diamond card. This was in win 98 and the only problem was an occasional "held off interupts message". Any two video cards will probably work. Its better I think to have one agp card such as the matrox or ati dual head cards. That will take the heat off the pci bus. If you have a matrox card you can ctrl click the maximize icon to maximize across both monitors. That will save you a couple of seconds. Im sure digidesign plans to support the retention of dual window positions in xp soon right? Mike |
