Smile Should I Have it Mastered?

Hey guys,

I hope this is the correct forum for this topic, as I did record it with my 003!

This is my 3rd original song, and I did everything myself. I'm just wondering if I should send it in (like my last 2 songs, to a company in Oregon called "Crazy Daisy Mastering"), or leave it "as is" and distribute it now.

I'm going to post 2 links: The first, is this song I'm talking about. The second, is one I had sent in to CDM for mastering. To be honest, I don't love the results, but it could be me. Some say you're too close to your own music, someone else should touch it up.

Since you guys are the pros, and you have helped me every step of the way, I'm asking for your advice. So please, give both links a listen if you could, and let me know.

Thanks guys!

What would help even more is if you posted the song you already had mastered in both versions: Before it was mastered and after it was mastered.

I think you should have a conversation with Crazy Daisy Mastering. If they are reputable they may be able to give you a much better idea of what they can specifically do for your tracks and how much it would cost. They may even give you a sample of how their work can improve your program material. It's worth a try in my opinion.

There are 2 good reasons why you don't "love the results". Either they didn't do a good job, or you(and they) didn't communicate well(communication is a major factor in getting good mastering results). I always recommend outside mastering(even though I have all the tools). Maybe its time to try someone else Abbey Road actually has a budget online mastering deal

I only have one version of the first song, (which I mastered using a Maxim plug-in). I was just wondering if you guys thought it was a "complete" sound, or if I should send it in.

Sorry, next time I will try to have both.

Maxim is a usable brick-wall limiter (so good that it's become sort of a 'standard' in broadcasting) but limiting is only *one* very small piece of the professional Mastering process. Mastering Engineers typically have the experience, the acoustic space, the monitors, specifically selected hardware and software, and often reputations that are genre specific. Maxim cannot take the place of this.

They are business-people though- so if you communicate with the engineer it may go a long way to getting you more satisfactory results. Tell them what you told us.

Could you post the second song before it was mastered so we could A/B before and after versions?

I will try and find the second song's "pre-mastered" version, and put it up with a link to follow.
