Default Used Mac thoughts

I believe I may be switching (back) to a MAC after a couple years trying to iron out all the problems on this PC setup. I'm looking at buying something like this and upgrading the RAM & hard drives.
I'd love a 6core Westmere & all that, but I can't afford $4K right now.
Any thoughts on this purchase? Is there a better option? I could spend up to say, $2500 if there was a compelling reason to.

Hey i posted an analysis on gear slutz a couple of days ago their computer folder imac vs mac pro analysis of costs and performance including Thunderbolt.

Basically there is at least a 2:1 price increase MP over IMac. The new i7 sandy beach imac outperforms entry level MP at roughly half the price including a comparable display.

New MP are likely soon with SB chips and TB but i think will be more expensive than current prices and I think current MPs will fall in price.

TB is expensive so if you don't need it and can wait i think there will soon be very good deals on new current MPs

So top of the line imac I7 is 2100 and gets you into MP processing speed, a current mid level mac pro and display faster than imac I7 is well over 4 grand !

Waiting a bit could be advantageous if you have time. Also apple sells refurb for about 10-15 off with full warrenty.

Good luck !

I just went through this same decision, I ended up with a brand new mac mini quad core i7 and upgraded to protools 10. I kept going back and forth between a 2009 mac pro and the mac mini. The mac mini is 50% more powerful then the 2009 quad core nehalem and runs the newest fastest 1333mhz ddr3 and has 2 hard drives and a thunderbolt port. Ive been running protools 10 for the last 3 weeks with huge sessions and tons of tracking, plugins, virtual instruments etc and have not slowed down once. I also upgraded to 16gb of ddr :)

Check out the mac mini!

If you go to apple.com and select mac mini, select the quad core i7 mini mac server, starts st $999, thing is a beast with 16gb of ram in it, blows away any older mac pro, but a new mac pro blows it away of course.

Just keep in mind it comes with OSX lion 10.7.3 and you can not load any older OS into it. So you HAVE to upgrade to protools 9 or 10. I went to 10 and it runs great, I was running snow leopard with protools le 8, its just as stable.

Yes that Mac Pro on your link is a big no no. Old stuff, very slow machine.
Can´t believe the prices are so high.
