You have to enable it (which yes is what the article is stating). And it's only going to help if the drive actually support TRIM. Not all do, especially USB and Firewire connected SSDs.

Trim in the past always uses OS X native Trim support. The OS X/filesystem code has to actually issue the SATA Trim (or equivalent for PCIe SSDs) commands to the drive. It was just the magic chant needed to tell OS X to do this or not that was a mess. It could be done by a low level OS developer utility, or using a trim enabler utility. What Apple has mostly done since 10.10.4 is make it easier to enable that OS support. The code that actually issues the trim commands to the drive inside the OS is pretty much the same.
