Default Finding the perfect technique to punch in vocals!

Hello, I am doing more and more in house recording as well as mixing using Pro Tools lately (coming from a 10+ years Cubase background) and I am wondering what some of your techniques in punching in phrases or sections of audio would be? I am using the quick punch and the pre roll. I am always fumbling around lately when I am trying to replace parts of a track.

Seems like I keep turning the pre roll on and off, monitoring audio card directly, looking for the phrase, etc.... Not quite smooth in technique.

So I am wondering what the fastest and smoothest method would be? I am usually recording a single track at a time. I have a Artist Control as well.

What's the order you would go in punching in a few words in the middle of a track?

Using the keyboard, or a quick-punch foot-switch works quite well. Hit PLAY a bar or two before the punch. When you get to the right spot, hit the F12 key(you are now in record). Hit F12 again, and you drop out of record(but keep playing) or hit STOP. If your interface(which you never mention) doesn't have a quick-punch jack, the Presonus Faderport does

I rarely setup auto punches or use pre or post roll. I punch in manually using the keyboard and Quickpunch.

Quickpunch is a damn beautiful thing. Alot of people don't know that if the transport is rolling, Quickpunch is always recording on any track that is record enabled. So, if you happen to be a bit late on a punch in, once you stop the transport, just use the Trimmer tool and pull back the beginning of the new region you recorded and the newly recorded audio will be there.

I either use QP, as described above, or a duplicate track. Really depends on what the artist wants. Some like to hear a previous take before the punch point, and some don't. Either way, it's a good idea to make the artist sing up to, and out of, the part that needs fixing. It will be a smoother transition between takes.

Use "click & drag" to set your punch points. Here's how I do it.
Duplicate the take (or track) so you're not working on the original.

Now select "QuickPunch" (pg. 412 in the Ref manual) which tells PT to capture audio before your punch in point, so that you catch the front of a line if the singer started a bit early, for example.

Arm the duplicated take or track (so it's record-ready), and give yourself two measures of pre-roll. Now find the phrase or section you want to replace or "punch in" on and click+drag to select just that phrase (so it's highlighted in black). Now hit "3" on your numeric keyboard, or however you initiate "record".

PT will now give you your pre-roll and automatically punch in at the top of your selected region and punch out at the end of it. Once you have the take that makes you happy you can use the trim function, and if needed, crossfade the punched line with the existing vocal track to make it smooth. HTH Best -
