Default OSX equivalent to Extensions in OS9 - OSX Optimization tips

As you all know, when we setup our OS9 systems we set all our extensions to base or base all and added just the Digi extensions and other limited number extentions. We did this to ensure we maximized the computer just for PT.

Well, now that we are on OSX, is there a way to do the same thing? Is there a way of seeing what services are started then stop them and prevent them from starting in the future to, again, maximize the system for PT6/OSX? What are your tips and please be specific as to the steps.

Thanks

That is an awesome website - I spent 35 bucks for a Jaguar Bible that doesn't have anywhere near that kind of info. I'm returning the book!

Great website, but really does not answer my question. The only thing I am really interested in are OSX's equivalent to OS9's extension manager. Does anyone have any specifics on this?

There is no equivalent to Extensions in Mac OS X with regard to Mac OS 9.

OS X does have what Apple calls kernel extensions, or kexts. The only program that I am aware of that uses its own kexts is Norton SystemWorks.

There is no equivalent. You don't have to worry about them now. Now there are new things to worry about (i.e. permissions and such)...
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Not true. They are still used but not as easily manageable as before. Apple prefers to treat the mac user as a moron with OSX, and tries to hide all the heavy duty stuff from view.

Most are now called .kext files and are located in system/library/extensions

But change them at your peril, unless you really know what you are doing. You can easily render your mac unbootable, so if you must play then make sure you have a bootable backup available to repair what you messed up.

One of the beauties of OSX is that open processes require no memory or processor power unless they are asked to do something.

If your interested in seeing what your computer is doing open the ProcessViewer in the Utilities folder. It will show you all running processes. You can also view this info with the terminal - type the command "top" to see all currently running processes, type q to quit.
I find it really useful to keep the CPU app (Utilities) open all the time with the small display on the desktop, it gives you a good idea of what is going on with various functions.
