Re: #8 Top DAW
I wouldn't call the severely crippled Pro Tools LE (required crappy interfaces included) a "serious attempt" . More like a condescending attempt.

Re: #8 Top DAW
It worked for me. Bought an MBox 3 with academic PT 8 LE several years ago (for $350, if I recall correctly) and rode the free upgrade wave right into PT12. That's a good return on my investment.

Re: #8 Top DAW
No doubt about Pro Tools being a great tool,
and ...for me, simply best ! Started out with Studio Vision Pro years ago, and after Opcode went down, I jumped to PT. Been there since ... no big deal. Frustrations and anger, oh yeah, but plenty of good work and big smiles as well ... G |

Re: #8 Top DAW
Funny list! But this list shows one thing for sure - innovation is not AVID's strong suit.
This also has to do with the fact that Pro Tools is the tool of choice for very different customers, not just composers/electronic music producers. They have to be more conservative in making changes to the application. But still...innovation times are long gone for AVID in my opinion. It also shows that AVID's claim of Pro Tools being the "Industry Standard" is very questionable. In Europe they never have been - 10 to 15 years ago people bought HD systems to use them as a back end in Logic. Loads of HD systems have been running this way. |

Re: #8 Top DAW
99% of all music and post production in Hollywood is done on Pro Tools
it's all in how you look at the numbers

This "story" is all about the proliferation of "bedroom jockeys", nothing more.

Indeed. That's the type of site it looks like. My guess is Cubase is the most widely used DAW in the world. Steinberg was giving away free copies of the LE version for years with just about every mid/lower audio interface sold on the market and they have been offering easy upgrades and crossgrades since the 1990's. I even remember the TDM version of Cubase back then. |

Re: #8 Top DAW
Who said anything about LE? PT9 was very much a serious attempt. Support for ASIO was the biggest carrot because then you could use any hardware at all with PT. It was what got me started with PT.
My personal opinion is that if Avid had decided to support VST plugins in PT11 and PT12, rather than come up with a whole new proprietary format in AAX, they would have been much more successful. |

Re: #8 Top DAW
Yes PT9 was a good step forward, but was still crippled compared to the HD software and every other DAW in it's price range. Even today my PT12HD license is still limited to 32 I/O if I want to use 3rd party hardware. I still think PT is hands down the best DAW for anything audio related and I use it every day. My point is that if they would have taken that market serious when the other DAWs started becoming popular they might now have a corner on all of the market, which I think would leave them in a much better situation today. V9 was a little to late.
