Default SMPTE Problems

I'm a new Protools user (after 20 years of being faithful to RADAR), and am struggling with a particular problem - I'm sure the answer is there but so far I can't find it!

I am using Version 2020.3.0 on an iMac (running Catalina) via a MOTU 828x thunderbolt interface.

I want to send SMPTE to my Yamaha 02R96 to run the automation but can't get it to work. The desk will see SMPTE generated from the MOTU but that is no help. Does Pro tools send code via the thunderbolt link? and if so how do I configure it.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Simplest way may be to just use audio file of tc playing out …
Google “ make timecode audio file”. There are a couple of sites that do this, free.

Default SMPTE Problems

Agree with PriorityTools that using a SMPTE Audio file would be the easiest (and tightest) integration of timing between the two.

Using the MTC to LTC converters available in some MOTU products usually requires a few seconds to lockup.

I remember putting SMPTE on channel 24 or 16 of the reel to run the automation.

I went to a Yamaha 02R and ADATs with an EMU Darwin for editing thereafter.

Went I went to Pro Tools I never looked back! I recall it was half was through an album

My advice is this, dump your projects into Pro Tools and run all the automation in Pro Tools. Forget any notion of running automation or mixing externally. There's absolutely no reason that outweighs the benefits of double clicking a Pro Tools Session and everything being there, mix, automation and much more in seconds.

Many thanks for the help. I have done as suggested and it works perfectly! Of course it would - thats what we did with multitrack machines. I dont know why I didn't think of it myself.

I understand Stephen's advice about dumping the desk and working totally in the box, but hey I've done it this way for far to long. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks and that certainly goes for an old engineer.
