Default mbox 2 pro- why making the simple things hard??

Hello.
I got the Mbox2 pro- it is supposed to be a great mobile interace.
my Macbook pro is hooked to the mbox and to my monitors- working great with the PT 8
BUT!!!
Sometimes I like to listen to music from an external devise for example
a minidisk player.
In all other audio interfaces you can plug enything to the input and hear it from the output but not here! No control panel making it impossible to control!
you will have to open Pro Tools or other recording software and "ARM" the record or use direct monitoring just to be able to listen to any input- my question is WHY???why making the simple things hard??
I paid good mony for this audio interface and i am not able to do a simple thing!
is there anyway to go around this?

minidisk player.
It's time to step in to the 21st century, if it was an audio file you could play it through iTunes/QT etc and have Pro Tools open at the same time.

I am not interested in converting all my minidiscs or opening the pro tools just to listen to something external.
All the other audio iterfaces allow you to do that- why not digidesign?
