Default Magic ID (what the is it?)

Okay, I've read all about the Magic ID problem and that it's caused a corrupt session file and is related to hard drive integrity. But what is it? It only gives me problems on rare occasion, on drives that regularly check out ok with disc warrior and tech tool pro. it makes me frown strongly.
