Default Leopard\'s slooowwww Fix Disk Permissions

I've just upgraded from G4 / PT7.2 to G5 8-core / PT7.4 and in the process of the installation I've come across the disturbing discovery that running "Fix Disk Permissions" in the Disk Utility takes a Long time.

When button is clicked, thermometer says approx. time to be 1 minute. I thought it was broken, as it got to about 10% and then didn't move for 5-6 minutes. I aborted several times, and while trying to find a contact number at Apple, eventually the thing completed. It took about 12 minutes. Subsequent re-running of FDP gave same results.

I know this isn't a Digi-Design issue- a Google search turns up a good number of similar stories. Has anyone found a cure or work-around for this?

That's the way it is on every Leopard machine I've worked on. It's unlike Apple to have such an apparent flaw in such a commonly used app like Disk Utility. The horribly inaccurate 1 minute status display just makes me laugh now. The first two times I repaired permissions I was really nervous because of that discrepancy.

Yeah, even using Cocktail under Leopard, repair permissions is a 15 minute job. Haven't seen anything authoritative as to why this is so. The main response seems to be that you don't need to repair permissions anymore.

Although it should be the same, for some reason it seem faster to do via the Terminal:

Open Terminal and type:

sudo -s then enter

at the prompt type your password and hit enter...

now type or copy this line

diskutil repairpermissions /
