Default Re: Dissapearing 1394 (possible resolution?)

So, once when I started my computer today, I checked my HW profile and found that my 1394 controller said it did not have enough resources to run. I uninstalled it (by right clicking and choosing uninstall) and then restarted. I have shut down (not restarted) and then started up again 5 times, and my 1394 controller has been there every time, followed by a succesful PT launch, and a succesful i tunes launch (I use my 002 for sound when checking mixes). Could it be that when I restore my computer (using True Image) that somehow the driver for the 1394 controller became corrupt?, and that this is not a Mother Board problem, but rather a problem with True Image? I will keep a close eye on this over the next few days while I mix.
These are just random thoughts, and bare in mind, I am no computer guru, but I will report back on this issue, and will indeed let everyone know if my problem was cured, or if it still happens.
Thanks for all of your feedback.

Hopefully that's it. My problems started out very speradically. I was able to "fix" it at first by reloading the drivers. However it started becoming a lot more frequent and started happening to my DVD drive as well. That's when I knew it was something related to the board.

Hello. I've just built my quad, but I'm not sure if Windows uses both cpus (Opteron 270). How can I check this? I can't see the cpus in the task manager. Is it possible to check up in PT how much cpus are in use?
And another question: Does somebody of you use a boot manager?

Thanks in advance

Schneemaa

Were you using any restoration software (IE: True Image, Norton Ghost.....) I am just curious, and if so, how often did you restore your system? I noticed this problem start after I restored once.
So far my system has started flawlessly all night, as I have been checking it over and over again to make sure. I won't know forsure until I have at least 4 - 7 days of solid work time to trust it again though. Once it runs, it doesn't stop.
I will keep you all posted.
Thanks for your reply Absent

Hi!

Does anybody know the accuracy of AMDs list of supported Opteron 265 motherboards - from a Quadzilla point of view?

Cheers,

I have True Image on my computer but I've never restored or rolled back to a prior image. I don't think that rolling back to a prior image could cause the problem without some kind of warning on the 1394 controller in the device manager instead of actually disappearing like nothing is hooked up to the motherboard. It could of been happening for a longer period of time on my machine but I didn't start investigating until my 002r quit in the middle of a session. When I went to device manager the 1394 controller was gone.

After getting a new board from Tyan, without changing a single thing in my system, it works flawlessly.

All in all we could have the same symptoms with totally different problems at the root.

I agree. Just for the record, I started up my system today and the 1394 Controller is still there. I am now very curious. It was at the point where my system would have to be restarted everytime to recognize the controller, now it sees it every time I turn it on (fingers crossed here).
Oh well, as long as it works.

Socket F Opteron with nVIDIA NFP3600 chipset

I put together a new PC last night so I havent had chance to test its stability fully but Pro-tools appears to be fine on this system.

The cost wasnt much more than the socket 940 based Quads. The Opteron 2210 (same speed as the 265) was exactly the same price as the 265. (Im in the UK)

The Tyan S2927 motherboard was about £50 more than the S2877 and the faster memory (DDR2667) was about £35 more than the other stuff. Also, at the moment i am using only 1 stick of 1GB RAM which makes this very affordable (if you can get away with 1GB) and looking at how upgradable this thing is id say its worth the extra cash.

Performance-wise I doubt that its any better than a 940 socket based machine using the same processor speeds but Socket F will accomodate the Quad cores when they arrive so it will out-perform the Socket 940 later.

heres my specs

Tyan Thunder n3600B S2927A2NRF
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thundern3600b.html

x1 AMD Opteron 2210 (same speed as the 265)

x1 Crucial memory CT12872AB667S (Registered)

Enermax 620 PSU Liberty (very quiet and tidy)

http://www.enermax.com.tw/english/Pr...ay1.asp?PrID=5

Asus 6600 silent 512mb graphics card

I will comment on stability when I can.

cheers

steve

Excellent! thank you Polf for the info this sounds the way to go now - i have been waiting to hear from you on this

its alot of money to spend if it goes wrong

i was looking at the cpu fans for socket F but there arent many out there - could you please tell me which you used?

....also interested in a dverb test with 1GB i think i could use this!! ( i dont use DFH or anything like that)

going to start to order this sysytem next week!

thanks again for the info!
Hello Joss1973,

sorry for the late reply,

the Tyan board comes with plastic brackets that screw onto the motherboard. Im not entirely sure which socket types fit this but Im pretty sure that the socket 940 type work here... I was given a free CPU heatsink/fan so not sure..

as for the dverb test im not sure how to do this..

cheers

steve

with pro tools launched, go to edit > playback engine. under here you can select your cpu's. you should be able to select 4. also under windos there is a cpu meter to see how hard they are working
