Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
Hi everybody,
I'm looking to get PT 8 and I need to update to Leopard, so I wanted to backup my system drive first like they say to do using CCC (the plan is to b/up the system drive to my external Glyph drive, the one I put all my PT sessions on). So I'm just about to hit Go when I see a little note at the bottom of the screen that scares me a little bit: Items on "Glyph" will be overwritten by items at the same path on "Macintosh HD". Does this mean it will erase everything on my Glyph drive (including all my sessions) and replace it with the copy of my system drive? Do I need to be doing this on an empty external hard drive? I hope not. I don't wanna be spending another couple hundred bucks on a new drive just for a backup. I'd rather be spending my money on ProTools goodies, etc. Sorry, I'm not a genius when it comes to computer terminology. Maybe someone can clarify this for me? Thanks.

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
Yes - create a new partition large enough for the clone or use a new drive.
Backup the drive before repartitioning. Rail

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
Can I create a partition when I already have stuff on it? Or should I copy all the Glyph files onto my Mac HD first and then partition?

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
There are some utilities out there to let you repartition without losing data.. but I wouldn't risk it.

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
In Carboncopycloner, under "target", you should create a new disk image on the glyph. Not just select the glyph, that will erase everything.

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
Sorry, I don't really know what that means. Could you please explain? What exactly is a "disk image"?

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
As the note says:
identical items with identical paths will be overwritten. CCC does a File by File Cloning not a Block by Block Cloning (HardDisk Image) So you don't need to backup the target, effectively. if you are still unsure read the excellent manuals of CCC. The copy will be bootable, also which is really convenient. BTW: you should ALWAYS have a back of you session files.

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
Hmm, let me see if I understand this. There seem to be 2 schools of thought here:
1. Backup my Glyph (the target) and then partition it, effectively erasing everything on it, but then moving everything back to one partition, and then put the system backup clone on the other partition. Or... 2. Don't need to bother backing up the Glyph and partitioning it. Instead, just use the Create a New Disk Image option when I'm cloning and I should be fine. Is this correct? As I have no expereince with this, anyone out there who can chime in and break the tie?

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
This is not a question of school but rather it depends on where you want to go in the future.
If you want to do periodic backups of you system drive, then partitioning your Glyph is the way to go, because it keeps things tidy, that is: keep the system backup separate from your Session files. If this is just a one time backup to get Leopard and PT running from your system drive while have an older OS X/PT to fall back to, you don΄t need to partition your drive for that ocasion. But yes at some point in the future it΄s the better Idea to make an extra partition. I was just answering the question if CCC will erase any files that are not identical on the target disk. If you have enough space on your system drive just copy your session files there an clone everything back to the (new) Glyph partitions. And remember: backing things up an different partition aka the same HD is totally useless.

Re: Question about Carbon Copy Cloner
OK thanks, I think I'm gonna partition the drive and clone on one of the partitions. I have one more question though. When I use the cloner, when I select Mac HD (my system drive), will that pretty much backup everything on the computer, including all the desktop icons, etc? (But, of course, not including the Glyph.)
