I use a Command 8 w/ HDX, Avid 192, 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and PT 2019.5... still works after all these years since PT 6. You may need a MIDI interface, I'm using a 2005 era Avid MIDI I/O. I've seen C|8's on ebay for $300. Hope this helps!

I seriously considered a Raven, but then asked around and the two friends I know that have had them both moved on to something else so I decided to try something else first.

I just found an old Digi 003 for real cheap and I'm gonna see if a good 8 fader unit will do the job or if I need to go for a 16 fader situation.

I'm considering a used Artist Mix w/ transport if the 003 doesn't work out.

I never liked the Command 8 for some reason. I didn't spend much time with it though. The look of the thing always turned me off for some reason and I hated the fader caps. How has it treated you over the years?

Haven't had any problems, motorized faders still work great, no missing pixels on display, very functional for me... funny I always thought the 003 was a bit creepy looking with the mushroom stalk knobs...

D-Command if you can’t afford a D-Control by far. I love mine!

The app is no longer being developed I don't think but maybe it's still available. It was a whopping $5 to purchase.
Just finish setting my iPad up and EuControl the new version looking really nice or just seems to run and sync better. Haven’t used it for a while well since updating to 2019.5 some weeks back, but need to use it today. But this new version definitely seems more solid same with 2019.5. Would love to have my TF5 talk to EuControl and use that as a control surface..... if ya listening Yamaha

If $1K is top of your budget, take a look at Faderport16(Presonus). I ran the original faderport on 3 systems and it actually covered a lot of ground(even on a rig that ran a C24 because I really prefer transport on the left). Currently using a Behringer X-Touch ONE but will probably sell it and get the new Faderport. Biggest reason here is because the Behringer doesn't seem to have any way to select automation modes on the selected channel(even the old faderport can do this).

I also had the 003 for a few years, but really only needed the transport buttons. Later on I moved to an Artist MIX and Transport, but swapped the Transport for the old faderport(Transport had too many buttons that I never used). After having the Artist MIX for 3 years, I found I just didn't need it(but your work flow may be different)

I also like the S3(but not the price) and am hoping for something new from Avid, Maybe an S1 and expanders to replace the old Artist series

The Faderport 16 would also get my vote. Read our review of the Faderport 8 with Pro Tools.

Hope that helps,

Mike

This would be my recommendation. Just make sure it's the updated black version and not the original silver iterations -- those no longer work with modern versions of ProTools (forced retirement by Avid).

I have an early silver one. It took the latest firmware and works perfectly with PT 2019.5!
