Default my mbox sounds like rice krispies in sprite W T F

just got an mbox
plug it in to the usb port on a music xpc c2
put some headphones on
and listen to that beautiful crackling noise!
for some reason unplugging the mouse (ps/2) made the situation
a little bit bitter but there is still a low crackling
so this computer is supposed to be approved for digi
but it seems they dont really know
i plugged the mbox into a dell
no noise works fine
can someone help me out maybe there's something i'm missing?
there are no other usb devices on the computer.
i tried plugging the computer into a conditioner
turned off all lights, etc... still noise. noise noise noise.
thanks for any help anyone could offer.
yeah i know the mbox sucks that bad but is there
a way to suck without sounding like dirty vinyl?
thank you.

Some PCs do not supply enough power through the USB bus to run the mBox properly. The most popular solution has been to hook it through a powered USB hub.

Searching this forum for "mBox noise" or "mBox crackle" will turn up a literal ton of other discussions about it.

FWIW, I don't think the mBox sucks at all. I started on the 001, I have the 002r at home, and I just got the mBox for work and for remote recording. It's a great little box if used properly; lots of really good stuff has been done with it. Just my 2¢

i got a powered usb hub 2.0 for $30 !
it makes the noise louder and nastier.
when i do things on screen, it causes slight
crackles, like moving a window or clicking
the start button.
sometimes the crackles match the hard drive light
sometimes they don't.
is there a grounding problem or something ?

Sounds like IRQ conflict. Please post the model num of your motherboard, chipset, etc. and the model of the motherboard you did not have the problem with. Check the irq map on both machines to see which irq's are shared with your USB.

Someone else just posted click problems using 48khg sample rates, but not the others. Were you using this sample rate?

my dell sucks. so it's complete crap that this thing will
run fine on a dell, but not a music xpc which is endorsed
by digidesign on their website to be compatible.

hi

i got my mbox about 3 weeks ago and i've had the exact same problem. Its really wierd, if i change a setting that affects audio like cpu usage or buffer size, it'll go away for about 60 seconds but then it gradually comes back. I did all the usual stuff like updated software, checked wires etc etc but it didnt help.

the other day after reading this thread i tried recording at less than 48k and i think it helped a little, the distortion/fuzz stayed away for longer and it wasent quite as bad, but the problems still there.

if anybody finds a fix for this please let me know, i know lots of people have had similar problems but i dont think anyones posted a solution.

good luck!

inertiatic...

well, i've been on the phone with MusicXpc and Sweetwater for the past few days.
i've gone over EVERYTHING, cables, power supply, powered usb hub, power conditioners,
different outlets, disabling devices, etc, etc, etc!!!
then i went into IRQ assignments in the device manager and it's showing that the video
card shares IRQ 16 with the USB ports. the video card is AGP so , i can't move it to a different
slot, and i went into the BIOS hoping there was a way i could assign it. no luck.
i tried disabling the com and printer ports and the AC97 integrated audio
hoping the video card might jump to the free IRQ. no such luck there either.
so now i'm
so, there's nothing i can do aside from removing the video card (i run 2 lcds, no good).
i am sending the mbox back and getting a digi002 since the firewire ports have their own IRQ.
if you have an mbox and it makes noise, just send it back.
if you're thinking about getting an mbox, check the IRQ assignments in the device manager
to make sure that your USB ports have their own IRQ. if they share with anything, you're gonna
be fcked.
i didn't really like the mbox anyway. it's like a toy.
i guess it would be useful for tracking a quick track or two somewhere out in the field
but it isnt THAT much more portable than a digi002. especially with those stupid feet.
hey digidesign, you need to catch up. look at presonus firebox.
digidesign, take a firebox, gut it, put an mbox inside there, and leave the firewire connection.

First, do you have Service pack 1 or 2 installed?

You need a minimum of service pack 1.

The other thing is that Celeron processors are not approved or supported. Most likely it will not work properly, even with the above service packs installed.
