Eleven rack without PT license ?

Hello everyone,

I'm about to trade a second hand eleven rack but the guy who owns it tell me that it was sold to him without protools license. Is that possible I thought that this device acted like a PT license when connected to the computer and though, was impossible to find it without this function. Am I right ?

Well

It will function as a standalone effects box....for ever.


It will not function as an interface for recording in PT until you obtain a PT license.

It can function in 3rd party daws as a recording interface....i.e. Studio1 Logic etc.....but just the same you would have to purchase a license for those DAWs also

But, is that even possible ? Are not ALL eleven rack supposed to contain a PT license in them core

Still, I would be happy though. I want to use it mainly for live playing and composition/recording (I have other DAW as well). I just hope I can use the preset edition software, even if the rack has no PT license.

The PT license isn't tied to the 11R in any way, so you can go about using the 11R any way you please.

Pro Tools requires a license, so if you are not getting one with your purchase, then you will not be able to run Pro Tools. You can however download Pro Tools First, which is free if you want to use Pro Tools. There are also monthly Pro Tools subscriptions you can buy to see if you like the 11R with PT, and without having purchase the full version.

As to how does he not have a license... I'm not sure if it was ever sold that way from Avid, but the 11R has been around a while and it's possible that someone sold the previous owner just the 11R without software.

There are a lot of 11 Racks sold on E-Bay without PT. As mentioned above, you do not have to have PT for the 11 Rack to be fully functional for whatever you want to use it for. I would suggest that you do obtain a foot controller though if you want to use it as a "live" tool. Makes changing patch's much simpler and faster than dialing through on the front of the 11 Rack.
