Quantizing Metal Drums
Is there anyone out there who has any tips for quantizing fast metal drums with lots of double kick. I have been using beat detective, but it has not come out sounding that great. I have also tried some other manual methods with mixed results as well. Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Quantizing Metal Drums
If you have 7.4 use Elastic Audio (there is a video about drums on the website).
If not...Redo the performance.... Protools is very powerful okay but it won't make all the work for you changing a frog into princess. It just helps tightening a bit so it means the performance must be as perfect as possible... |

You guys are harsh!
I'm pretty clueless in protools and I wish I could help. I've got to say, I've had some weird things happen with groove quantize myself. Even when I experimented with a simple, slow beat and a few quicker notes layered in. Can't explain it but I've heard some wacky things happen to beats that were absolutely on time...so I'll be eagerly awaiting some constructive comments on this post. |

Re: Quantizing Metal Drums
A friend of mine who specializes in metal uses beat detective all the time. He told me to take the song in small sections (one or two bars at a time) and process them. Even then he said he always manually checked the edits. To him it was time comsuming but the results were worth it.
But after he flew up to my place last week and checked out 7.4 he's updating ASAP. Elastic audio seems the way to go now. EA process your tracks, switch their timebase to ticks instead of samples, and quantize away (assuming that you used a click or have made a tempo map). I Youtubed a whole bunch of EA videos, there is plenty of instruction out there for you. Btw: he also swears by Sound Replacer for modern metal drums...

Re: Quantizing Metal Drums
work on small sections, 8 bars max.
Do you have the resolution set to 32nd notes? Analyze with sub-beats? Use collection mode if you've got it for the best results. Analyze the kick track, add to collection, analyze the snare track, add unique to collection, select all your drum tracks, separate regions, region conform. Do the whole song, then apply region smoothing and crossfades.
