PT9 Upgrade with eleven rack

I have been using Eleven rack with PT8 with no problems. I purchased the upgrade to PT9. I installed all the new drivers and firmware for 11R prior to upgrading Pro Tools. I installed PT9 upgrade now I get this error when starting up PT9 . (Eleven Rack is powered on before starting up PT9)

Error: missing iLok authorization for Pro Tools 9. Please insert necessary iLok to continue.

Not sure why it's asking for this. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong but because pt9 doesn't have proprietary hardware I.e. you can use any interface you like, it requires an ilok dongle to authorize it. Again, I may be wrong on this.

Is this something I would have to purchase? They (Guitar center) told me that PT9 could be used with any interface but they didn't mention anything about a iLok dongle.

I remember seeing somewhere that a version of pt9 came with it. Not sure where, maybe the avid site. I got mine from audio MIDI dot com for 45 bucks for use with steven slate drum trigger. I say if the douche at gc sold you a version without ilok and didnt bother to ask you if you needed one take it back and swap it out. The pro audio guys ought to know better. Just my opinion. I also say search the avid site and verify they sell one with ilok. Sorry I can't help more but I mainly use cubase :)

you are NOT wrong good sir, you are - in fact, stupendously correct my good man.

PT9 requires an iLok with the Auth on the iLok.

If you do NOT have an iLok, then yes you need to purchase one. So did you buy the Pro Tools 9 Full or Pro Tools 9 Upgrade/Crossgrade (I use 'full' in a descriptive way, the software itself is exactly the same, both are full versions of PT9)

ILoks have been used with Pro Tools and other Daws to Authorize some Plugins, like those from Waves, SPL, Digidesign ect....

Some companies will let you choose to use either an iLok or Challenge/Response to authorize your software.

Other are iLok only or challenge/response only.

Pro Tools LE has never required an iLok. And it still does not. For LE, the interface was the authorization.

Pro Tools M-Powered required an iLok and M-Audio interface

Pro Tools HD required an iLok and HD cards.

Pro Tools LE has been retired, Pro Tools 9 takes over LE, HD, and M-Powered.
The Authorization(s) you have on the iLok determine the "version" that loads, either PT9 for all LE,M-Powered, and now ANY 3rd party Interface. Or PT9 HD if you have the HD auth and a HD core card or Native card in your PC.

You can use PT9 and PTHD9 authorization with any ASIO compliant interface or no interface at all. If you have the PTHD9 license, then when opening PT with no interface or a Non-HD interface you have access to PT9+ Complete Toolkit options.

If you buy the PT9 Full version for $599, it includes an iLok with the auth already on it.

If you buy the M-Powered or LE crossgrade ($349 and $249 respectively) you get a code to register at Avid.com and they will send the iLok License to your iLok.com account, and you will sync the license to your iLok. With the crossgrade for LE you must have a valid LE interface serial to get your iLok license. M-Powered requires something similar, not sure if they require the serial number from the M-Powered 7/8 box and or you to surrender your current M-Powered iLok license. Havent looked into the M-Powered crossgrade very deep. But we are dealing with LE so forget everything I said about M-Powered

You can buy an iLok anywhere. And it can be the "key" style or the new iLok 2.0, either will work.
