Default Delay comp when overdubbing drums?

For some reason I can't wrap my head around the logic of this. I have a tune which is all tracked, with plugins on all the tracks, pretty much mixed, but I've decided to replace the sampled drums with a live drummer. When I track him do I turn delay compensation on or off? If it's on, and all the other tracks are delayed and lined up then he will play in time with those tracks. But on playback will his new tracks then be delayed thus throwing them out of time?

?????????

Thanks,
-R

Everything will be in sync as long as you don't have any high delay inducing plugins on the master fader and are not recording the drum mics through auxes and then bussing them to audio channels.

So leave delay compensation on?

Thanks,

Screw it. Leave it off. So much easier.

If the audio tracks you are recording on have NO auxes before or after them and they are routed directly to the left right outputs! and the master output has no plugins on it!! then you might get away with ADC on.

To be absolute sure about the timing and to avoid the drummer having to play with delay compensated tracks then turn ADC off, temp disable any plugins that are causing more than about 100 samples delay and especially RTAS plugins on auxes and any plugs on the master bus and record the drums then re-enable the plugs.

The drummer won't mind the mix sounding a bit "un-mixed" whilst he is laying his part down.

So that thread refers to checking the box in the I/O setup window that says "Compensate for input (or output) delay after recording pass."

I'm guessing that means that with ADC on (if you have plugins on previously recorded tracks), you'll be hearing tracks late and thus playing to them late. In that case, does checking that box cause your newly recorded track to be moved forward in time by the ADC amount, so that on playback the ADC will delay it (as it delays the other tracks) and it will be in sync with the other tracks?

If so, then you should overdub with ADC on and those boxes checked?

Not much explanation in the documentation.

We should request a ruling from the bench...
