Default 5.1 Monitor Controller

Hey all

Looking for some suggestions / advice on 5.1 monitor controllers. I'm looking at upgrading and shopping for a monitor controller. For 5.1 I need something with bass management, and fold down options would be great too.

I was also hoping to find something that with a button push or preset could switch to stereo monitoring, with nothing being sent to sub ( for Music mixes and such)

So far the closest product I have found is the Blue Sky 5.1 Controller / Bass management system. Just not sure if this could take care of my Stereo needs.

My other option might just be a controller and a patch bay.

Thoughts / Suggestions

cheers
Kevin

I just recently bought the surround monitor controller from SPL (Sound Performance Lab), and I highly recommend it.

We have MANY systems from Crookwood (U.K.). Very high quality (he used to design for SSL and Focusrite, among others) and very customizable including full downmix capabilities. Price is very competitive with Grace and others.

Info at http://crookwood.com/products/Monito...s%20-%20C2.htm

I use the SPL 5.1 as well (2489), I've used it extensively. I give it a 8/10. The connectors on the button to go from Surround to Stereo crackle sometimes so you have to kinda hit the button a couple times to get a solid contact connection. Also, the big knob becomes loose over time with a lot of use but has a screw on it you can tighten. It's definitely the best of the cheap out there.

Probably the most beautiful and nicest model (in my opinion) is this

I'd love one of those, haven't used it though.

Martin sound and tascam also make controllers.

We also are using the SPLP 2489, and are quite happy with it overall.

Hi Kevin,

if you got the money and would like to buy a professional surround controller, go to www.rtw.de and look up for the 31900. You can get it with dolby e/ac3 decoder or sdi deembedder. 2x8ch analog and 2x8ch aes/ebu. Dolby e metadata work on the controller, BLITS channel identification, ch 7/8 are routable to l/r etc.

my 2 cents

regards

jochen

Contact SPL, they will replace the buttons under warranty, down time is less than a week. It goes to Thermal Relief in Las Vegas, excellent service work.
