Default old g4/001/macos10.3.9 maor problem.....

hello all i am engineer/ tech from hollyweird and i am trying to help a fried of mine, my friend has an old g4 400 tower and is using a 001 with os10.3.9, whats weird is that although the cpu works great, pro tools boots fine, but when i try to open a session i get this shaded translucent screen that informs me that i must turn off my computer now.....i hve tried to re-install both os and protools to no avail,as well as using my own 001 cable, and finally i believed that maybe there is a corrupted ram stick and there is 448meg of ram in the box and i have tried swapping the ram sticks at all configuration again to no avail.....i know this an almost archaic system and that maks findind info for it all the more difficult, but PLEASE if any one knows whats happening please let me know, and thank you in advance............

PTLE 6.4 is only officially supported with 10.3.8. That said I'm using 10.3.9 with no problems, but I'm using QuickTime 6.5.2. QT7 is a no-go.

You can run Panther/6.4 on a 400mhz, but it runs out of steam pretty quick. You'd be better off running 5.1.1 on OS9 if you need a decent sized track/plug count.

I remember I had loads of problems with 10.3.9. Use 10.3.8 or maybe 10.4.1 if supported.

I was using 10.3.9 on my G5, but I don't think it was ever officially supported by Digi.

Ya Core Audio just plain sucks in 10.3.9 - I had much better luck with 10.3.8 too. I'm not sure what Apple was thinking with 10.3.9 but it broke more audio programs than fixed for me. And then Tiger fixed many of those issues that 10.3.9 had.

So revert to 10.3.8 and Quicktime 6.5.2 if you can. You can use oldapps.com or oldversions.com to get older versions of Quicktime I believe. Good Luck!

Which version of CAD were you using? 6.9 works for me with the caveat that with some apps like GarageBand you need to launch CAD first or you get no sound.

Your friend may have one of the first G4 towers with PCI graphics which are not compatible with PTLE 6.x. So say the Digi Compat doc's. I tried it with a B&W G3 from which the G4 Yikes! was spawned, and could never get PTLE 6.x to run on it, although there are those who claim to have done so. That translucent screen of death indicates a kernel panic in OS X, which might be caused by a dodgy RAM stick, but if we are indeed talking about a PCI graphics G4, then I suspect it's the lack of AGP graphics which might be causing it. Which is bad news. If your friend wants to run the 001 with OS X, then an AGP graphics machine is needed. I was faced with the same problem and got a G4 Digital Audio. Any old G4 with AGP graphics will run PTLE 6.x with a 001, and I never had a problem with OS X 10.3.9.

YMMV.

Hope this helps.
