Drawing waveform underneath a fade

When I was using Pro Tools 8 up to 10, I used to be able to edit the waveform underneath a fade in/out using the pencil tool. All I had to do was zoom in to the maximum zoom and the pencil would no longer be greyed out and I could make waveform adjustments.

Since version 11, I've been unable to do this and found no way within preferences to enable it. I've also had no luck with online searches. Anyone know if/how this is possible?

Fades are no longer rendered (I believe that went away in PT11), so to redraw the waveform under the fade you'll need to either remove the fade, redraw, then reapply the fade, or select the fade area and consolidate (shift-opt-3) and then redraw.

I believe this works because drawing is destructive.

Drag the same clip/file that you have the fade on to a different track, fix it there. It should fix the clip with the fade on it too since they are the same file referenced and the fade is not rendered but played back in real time.

That's a good idea - I wonder if PT will require re-caching the audio to play back correctly on the desired track? In the past I've had mixed luck with this sort of thing, and had to close and reopen or change my cache settings to get it to work...
