HD MADI
MTRX
Put the computer in the same room as the interface

Professional studios with machine rooms and audio post production deal with a lot more than 50’ runs.

DigiLink is limited to 200 feet (100 feet at higher rates), and one cable carries 32 channels (daisy-chaining two interfaces)

More info here.

As said 200/100 feet depending on whether you are recording for bats or not

Where on earth did you get that misinformation (50' and 16ch) from?

Live as well. Have lost count how many times I have used PT at FOH and had my interfaces/preamps on stage.

But using AVB you do actually get 64 channels right?
Avid consoles connect to PT using AVB and do get 64 channels.
I understood this is a workaround to get more i/o.

No.

Which Avid consoles hook up by AVB? The S3? -- it only has 2 channels. The live desks? -- different kettle of fish with their own HDX engines.

You want more than 32 channels you need something with a (mini)digilink connector.

To be clear, you can use interfaces with more than 32 channels. And they will show up in the i/o setup (like MADI or Dante or AVB or aggregate audio interfaces) but only the first 32 work.

Yes, you can use VENUE LINK to record and playback up to 128 channels from/to S6L but how does this relate to the DigiLink question as it is totally different beast? And besides, that requires a Live Sound Production Toolkit license on your iLok. Without the license you are limited to 32 i/o whether you have Ultimate or standard software.

If you want to save a buck, the best way is to buy live console, right?

Ok sorry guys-

I had that in my head but clearly I was wrong.

Still, I don't understand why you guys are against Avid offering this. It's still a tier, I'm fine with paying for 64 IO, they can still reserve greater than 64 IO for HDX. Why is it important to you all that they don't make this available?

You got that wrong as well. Nobody is against Avid offering software unlocked I/O tiers but as long as they are not available it is futile to think what if they were.

They have three options:
1) no change, tiers per hardware
2) allow Live Sound Production Toolkit to open 128 I/O (or 64 I/O even)
3) sell 32 I/O packs (for up to 128 I/O for example) like the new Voice Packs

If they did this, I bet it would be effective on Ultimate software only. Just like the Voice Packs.
