Default 3:1 Rule - Need Clarification

Should "mic 2" be 3x the distance from where "mic 1" is positioned - or - 3x the distance between "mic 1" and the source? Hopefully, that made some sense.

Thanks DUC folks,

rockrev

The distance from mic 1 to the source is "X" inches. The distance between the mics is 3x.

Whew . . . thanks man. That's what I always understood it as (and practiced). I haven't really had any problems when recording a source with two mics, but I did have an overhead problem last week (see my other post for more info). I just wanted to make sure b/c it was worrying me.

Thanks!
