192 I/O: how bad?
I still use my 192 I/O, although not the converters. Convertion is done by external dCS converters connected to a digital card. And the clock is also an external dCS.
I always assumed that the 192 I/O only works like a "connector" between my converters and Protools, the way I use it. But is this really the case? I read that new interfaces are a lot better than the 192 I/O. Do I get a better sound quality when I would replace the 192 I/O with a modern interface? Thanks, Best, Niels |

Re: 192 I/O: how bad?
Hi: I don't know if I'd say they were "a lot" better. They're a little better. Not really night and day in my opinion.

Re: 192 I/O: how bad?
IMO, the new interfaces are a lot better than the blue ones. Perhaps not a night and day difference like black MIX boxes compared to Apogee's, but these new ones are really very much closer to Apogee's that it has become hard to tell which is which.

Re: 192 I/O: how bad?
Ok, a lot of a little... But is it the convertion which is better? Will there be a difference when I use external converters?

Ok, Craig, thanks. I'll check, but I think I don't have SRC enabled.

Re: 192 I/O: how bad?
Plenty of hit records were(and are) done on 192's(heck, plenty were done on black-faced ADATs). I have a good friend(with LOTS of gold records to his credit) who not only swears by them(the 192), he prefers them to the new IO boxes. My 2 cents, but at his level, its his talent and not the gear I'll start believing the hype if I manage a gold record this year(having recently moved to HD IO boxes)

Re: 192 I/O: how bad?
Yup, plenty of hit records were for sure made on 192's. They are for sure still being made on 192's. I have both a couple of 192's and an HD IO. I challenge anyone to a double blind listening test to tell the difference, nine out of ten times, between them. Of course there is a difference but it is not night and day by any means. We make records all year and we are still using the 192's as our HD system is still the most functional one for the workflow that we need to have happening for the work that we have to do. The source has so much more to do with the quality of sound. Way way more than the converter's.
