We have actually considered doing RE versions of our plug-ins in the past, but it is unfortunately not technically feasible.

Ableton Live works both ways - host or slave. So you can slave Reason to Live but Live can also be slaved to Pro Tools.

Pro Tools only works as a master and Reason will only work as a slave.

Considering Propellerheads created Rewire, it's bizzarre that they chose to only allow Reason to work as a slave.

I don't think passing audio from PT to Reason has anything to do with a master/slave relationship. Or does it? Not sure as there's so precious little in the public domain on the Rewire protocol. And even the PropHeads don't say much particularly when it comes to passing MIDI from PT to Reason - I find that Reason synths need two paths to accomodate both MIDI notes and cc7 volume messages if you're working inside a Combinator.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it is unfortunate...BC plugs would be such a fantastic addition to the rack!

I don't think we're talking about the same thing. Rewire has nothing to do with MIDI per se. Yes, you can direct a PT MIDI track at ANY Reason instrument on the rack. Rewire deals with the audio output. As of now, you can easily route the sound of any Reason instrument back to a PT AUX or Audio track. But what you can NOT do is send the AUDIO output of a PT Audio or Instrument track INTO a Reason track. You must first EXPORT from PT, then IMPORT into Reason, if you want to apply any Reason fx (Alligator, Scream 4, etc). But then you CAN use Rewire on the imported track to send it BACK to PT AUX or Audio track for further processing and mixing. And all this with Reason instantiated on a PT instrument track.

Correct.

That is why I posted the master/slave comment. If Reason could act as a master and PT as a slave, you could do exactly what you (and many others) want to achieve.

As I mentioned before, Ableton Live can act as both master or slave. There's probably other DAWs that can as well, but I wouldn't know which.

Rewire is how MIDI gets from PT to Reason so yes it does have something to do with MIDI. And yes it also gets audio from Reason back into PT.

All this talk about master/slave reminds me that Sony Acid was (may still be) both a Rewire slave and master.

Right. I was focused on the Audio part, not the MIDI. Sure, in the background Rewire connects Reason with a host with MIDI.

You’ve outlined another solid Reason why “Convert Audio to MIDI” should be included in an upcoming Pro Tools release – it would certainly re-define our “workflow”:
