Default HDX, are you running out of voices?

Howdy again,

I'm still toying with an HDX upgrade, currently on HD3 Accel, system is solid and stable.

I do have issues at times though mixing at 96k when mixing native and TDM plug ins running out of voices... I assumed (naively) that this wasn't an issue with HDX.. how are you guys travelling in this regard??

All info appreciated, been on the current platform for years.. I'm a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' sort of guy but I am running into the voices issue a bit.

I have been switching to mixing totally natively and monitoring out an Apogee duet.. it's silly how well this works but I am running out of processor juice at times.

Speaking of which, I'm running a modern 12 core cheese grater, how are you guys setting this up (How many processors etc)

Thanks for your time and knowledge!!

Stef.

"HD3 Accel, system is solid and stable."

I suggest to keep the above system and get a new system for your upgrade.
A bit of a $-hit but the HD3 becomes a Bruno-Reso, Blue Virus instrument running early HD10 or HD9

Or see if the trade in is still in play and yes, there is a big difference but some is lost as well, hence my suggestion.

Hi Stef,

This is one of the main reason (voice allocation problems) that i made the switch from HD3 accel to HDX1 more than 2 years ago.
I love the TDM system but i was at a point where in mixing, i was using a lot of DSP plugins and a lot of native plugins. I was always pushing the system to its limits and i was always playing with voice allocation vs chip allocation, the system was always re allocating the DSP on the chips, it was painful.

HDX is much more efficient, it takes less voices for a native-dsp-native trip than TDM. And you always have your 256 voices available, no DSP chips taken on the cards. And full delay compensation without a hit (unlike TDM).
Honnestly, since i am on HDX, i never even tought about voice allocation. Never had an issue with it.

I never regretted my move.

Cheers.

Luc

...same here like the post above,
coming from HD2accel where i often reached
my (DSP) limits ,
now on HDX + PT12 i never touched
the limit even with much more dsp plugins running.

onliest thing i miss is the bulletproof stability
of PT10 on HD hardware....
never seen there something like AAE9171 etc.
(one or two times per day when recording with HDX)

i would (like me ) keep the HD system (maybe only for recording?)
and upgrade to HDX.

Never had this error. Weird. What is your system?
For me, HDX is as stable as my old trusty HD3 accel rig.

HDX , macpro 5.1 , Sierra , 48gb ram ,few SSd +WD Black , etc PT12,7 ..
mostly only DSP Plugins , all current.

AAE9171 occurs nearly ever in the first attempt of playback or recording
within few minutes or seconds after starting PT...
i have this error with session with ONE track or hundreds , with picture and without
if this happens it mostly does not come back , as long as you dont shut down PT.
onliest "workaround" i found : force playback till AAE9171 occurs ,
then it wont come back and i can start recording...
I had a case at avid and the onliest solution they found is a buffersize
of 1024 , which is a joke if you use only dsp plugins and plan to record with them.

Did you start with a Sierra Clean install? or even a OS 10.11 clean install?
Boot drive over 50% full?
My system is similar although fairly solid.
How about your video card? (I'm a Radeon HD 7950 Mac edition)
Power split for HDX
