Default G3 Vs G4 - Interesting!

Just thought we'd pass this along.
A little experiment was tried in our studio recently.
We had just purchased the new dual processor G4 - 500. We thought we'd check it out against our trusty G3 B&W.
Each had )S 9.04 installed/Both 256 MEGRAM

We installed:

2X Video cards running digital outputs
2X SGI LCD monitors
ATTO dual channel SCSI
MAGMA 7 SLOT

G4 results ( the only exception to the above
is the G4 will not accept 2X pCI video cards so we just connected one)So we could not get dual monitors going anyway. Only one.

PCI Buss errors galore with LAMP 4.5.1
#6042 (?) Couldnt run LAMP 4.5.1 and change screensets. AUdio always failed.
Some PCI Buss errors with ProTools 5.01
#6042/.
SCSI PCI buss errors as well.

G3

Worked with both monitors fine
No Buss PCI errors
SCSI worked fine
DUAL monitor 2X PCI worked fine.

Just thought we'd pass this along.

This is kind of old news. It's well documented that PCI video cards in AGP G4's cause -6042 errors. You need an AGP card for video.

There is an approved dual monitor AGP card (the Appian, I think) that doesn't mess with the PCI bus.

As far as the SGI monitors, I've heard that there may be a dual monitor AGP card for them coming soon. I don't know if it will be OK for Pro Tools though.

The G4 is a different animal under the hood. Different architecture in the motherboard. PT 5.0.1 is not configured to the new G4. PT 5.1 will be compatible w/ the new g4's but still will not be optimized for the Altivec processors and the dual processing. Alot of things will change during the transition to OSX which uses the dual processors. Then PT will take advantage of native power for RTAS plug-ins.

That's not the point we were making.
We did not try and put a PCI card into an AGP slot.

THe point is that the G3 using (2X PCI cards )performs much better than the G4 using only one PCI card and no AGP video usage. We didnt even use the AGP slot and the G3 worked better be far.
