Default Video Engine keeps stopping.

I’m having problems with the Video engine stopping over and over and over again while working on a 1hr documentary. The video is an .avi exported from Adobe Premier CC and is about 13GB. I read in this forum to convert it to Avid DNxHD 36 using Streamclip So I found the setting 1080p/25 DNxHD 36 8bit but when I try to play a 30sec file of bars and tone converted with those settings I just get black. Are these the correct settings or is there something else I need to do?
I’m running PT12.4 native, Win7 with 8GB of ram. Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you installed the Avid Codecs on your Protools computer?

I had an older version of the Avid Codecs “Avid Codecs LE 2.3.8 Windows” but have now uninstalled them and installed “CodecsLE_2.7.1_Win” and get the same results no video just black.

When I attempt to convert a file in Streamclip I select file – Export to avi. Then select” AVID DNxHD Codec” under Options select 1080p/25 DNxHD 36 colour levels 709 alpha none. Back in the main screen selecting either 720 x576 unscaled or 720 x576 DV PAL gives same results. Under frame rate, interlaced scaling is checked.

Interestingly they don’t play in Streamclip after being converted. VLC plays them properly but QuickTime 7.7.9 will not. It is not QTPro.

Any other ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks
Scott

That appears to have worked at least on a 30sec file. I'll give it a try for real on Monday.

Thanks
Scott

I always convert AVI's to MOV. Theoretically it shouldn't matter but I've had iffy behavior over the years with AVI.

There are numerous AVI codecs so in the case of a supplied file encoded by a less common AVI codec reliable playback will depend on your having the appropriate AVI codec installed.

FWIW in a test here this morning I have played 45 minutes (from a 124GB, 92 minute clip) then a series of quick start stops without issues here.
I encoded from a H264 movie with Sorenson Squeeze Pro 10 to DNxHD 185. on an internal SSD data drive. The test computer is a 2 year old home built i7 with 16GB's of RAM. OS Windows 7 64bit Pro and using Protools HD 12.4.
(To be fair this test session only has 3 mixed stereo tracks and no plug ins with the media on a different, SATA, drive.)

Thanks Farhoof that did the trick. Didn't have to restart the video engine at all yesterday.
