I am in the middle of a 3 Week RMA debacle. The guy at customer service tells me over and over The Technician is looking at it. I have read other horror stories concerning Gigabytes RMA system. At this point I have Lost All Confidence in the Integrity of this company and will never buy another Gigabyte Product.

It has been fun. But when it is over it is over.

That's cool... but what exactly is the problem you're having with Gigabyte?

I hope X79 on ASUS serves you better than X58 on Gigabyte.

Hi guys,

Just overclocked my i7-930 to 4GHz (my first overclock!). All is stable but I want know is it normal or okay for the CPU cores to idle around 40 - 45 C? Other info: Asus P6X58-e Pro mobo, Hyper 212 Plus cooler, HAF 932 case with all four fans running.

Also, why are my two Sata 6g drives (connected to the two Sata 6 ports) showing up as SCSI?

Thanks,
Spence

40-45 is cool for an OC'd machine. Nothing to worry about. If it starts pushing 70-80, then you need some better cooling.

Thanks! It's a fresh install so I'll watch for the 70-80 mark once PT is up and running.

I ended not yet making my PC purchase as anticipated, I got caught up in a kitchen remodel first; what can I say, "Happy wife-Happy life." So now I am putting my list back together and I am revisiting the "Overclocking and cooling."

Someone mentioned that I really don't need a cooling system unless I am overclocking, so I am wondering, "Do I need to overclock?"
Are folks overclocking because they are finding it neccessary in order to adequately run their rigs, or is it more of a "let's squeeze every last bit of juice from the orange, because we can?" -which is cool too, but I'm trying to stick to the neccessities.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want lag, nothing worse than trying to record percussion with any sort of latency, but I am wondering with my small LE system (factory 3), usually just running one artist at a time, if I'd be OK without overclocking and without the cooling system. I suppose (thinking out looud) I could always add it later if needed.

As it stands here is my part list-
COOLER MASTER HAF 932
ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011 Intel X79
Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo)
CORSAIR Vengeance 32GB (8 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
CORSAIR HX Series HX750 (CMPSU-750HX) 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM

All thoughts from the experts appreciated.

I run the 3930K with a Gigabyte board and have had no need to overclock at all. Huge sessions... No problems... Air cooling.
