Default THIS PROBLEM IS MAKING ME CRAZY! HELP

I have a Mac Book pro, and i upgraded my pro tools and everything. My mbox is being recognized and everything seems to be working except that i can't change my drives to playback or record! i even bought an external hard drive and reformated everything. i also delete the colume settings before starting. but when i go to workspace it says my drives are not valid audio volumes? should i give up?

What type of external hard drive is this? If it's USB, you won't be able to use it with Pro Tools.

If it's a USB drive, you won't be able to switch it from transfer volume.
