Best machine for PT LE 8.0.5 with Digi 003 Rack?
I own a Digi 003 rack and bought PT 8 LE (which I recently upgraded to 8.0.5) and am having big issues (blue screen of death at startup). I'm starting to wonder if my PC is damaged, and wondering if there's something I can get that will just WORK with my PT8 installed on it and my Digi 003 connected to a firewire port.
Many have suggested a Mac (off ebay, since I'm on a garage budget) and others suggest building a PC, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the time or expertise to build one. I'd like to save the $ by keeping my Digi 003 and just installing my PT from the disc. If I can (or should) cannibalize my current PC I could do that. But if anyone has a good idea for what machine (Rain? iMac?) I can get that will simply get me up and running, I'd love to hear it. I'm not a total newbie to PCs (have always used them and can swap basic parts, add memory, etc.) but am by no means an expert. Thanks for any advice! Re: Best machine for PT LE 8.0.5 with Digi 003 Rack?
The VIA firewire card may be the problem. AN approved TI card and turning OFF(disabling) the wifi when running PT might help.
As for building a new system, your drives and graphics card could be recycled, but nothing else. The best systems right now are based on the socket 2011 intel i7, an X79 motherboard(Asus and Gigabyte being the better brands) and quad-channel RAM(4 matching sticks of DDR3). If cash is tight, I would shop eBay for a used package of a socket 1366 i7(950 and up), and X58 motherboard and a triple-channel RAM kit(3 matching sticks; 3x4GB for a 12GB total). Those parts should be available for around $500-600 as a package. You CAN use any ATX case, but the Antec P180 is a great used option(under $100) and the P280 is a killer quiet case(but pricey). I would get a name brand power supply of at least 6500 watts In any case, you NEED 8.0.5 to run with Windows 7.

Re: Best machine for PT LE 8.0.5 with Digi 003 Rack?
Thanks SO MUCH for the input!
I will begin trying to piece those parts together to the best of my ability. Having read a lot of your past posts, I'd love to get your two cents on: 1. Any real advantage to going with a Mac over a PC? 2. Anyone that builds a machine you'd recommend? I've looked at places like Rain, and had people tell me, "just get an iMac" because, in all honesty, I'd love to have something I just know will work. My budget is definitely tight, but I've noticed folks on the forum mentioning having machines they put together for $1k or less that they're really happy with and I guess I'm looking for a shortcut to that happiness. I like my Digi 003 and if the only thing I can recycle is my drives then I'm leaning toward a new machine to plug the Digi 003 into. Plus, I get that warning when I try to start PT that I'm using NTFS format drives with 11 character limits, asking me if I should quit. If I need to upgrade to PT11 I will, but do I? Thanks again! |
