Default bounce to disk vs. Export region as files

I've read the past threads regarding exporting regions as files command. They all seem to be a "how to" rather than "what is".

I always use bounce to disk when I need to convert sample rates for burning cd's. Today I discovered that "export region as files" accomplishes the same task. Is there any difference in how audio files are processed between bounce to disk and export?

Any knowledge would be appreciated.

Bounce to disk makes a rendition of the session in real-time and will include volume, panning, plug-in fx, aux inputs, etc and their automations. You would use that to make a "mixed-down" file (or files) of your multitrack session.

Export selected as files is non-realtime and exports only the regions and their fades. That is, no volumes, panning etc...

There is no virtually point in using bounce to disk if you have no multitrack material, plug-ins, volume automations and so on.

One thing to think of is that "export regions as files" does not use dithering. It just chops of 8 bits if going 24->16. You must use bounce to disk in that case.

I think I read on this forum that the dithering option in the preferences menu is exclusively for exporting files. I'm not sure, so you'll have to search on it.

So, for example, I print a final mix to a stereo track in Pro Tools. The session is 24 Bit, 48 K. I need to convert the file to 16 Bit, 44.1K to burn a cd. I always use bounce to disk, and I should continue to do so, according to the explanations here of exporting a file, right?

Remember that the internal processing for PT LE is 32 bits floating. For TDM, I think it is 24 bits. Therefore, if you are even going from 16 bits to 16 bits, you'll need dither.

Sorry guys,

PT is dithering when using the "export selected" command. It's when you use bounce to disk that it doesn't do it. In that case you'll have to put dithering on the master bus. The dither option in the preferences only applies for audiosuite plugins. Sorry for the confusion
