Question Pro Tools on Macbook Pro, enough power?

I've just bought a MacBook Pro, 2.66ghz.

Is it powerful enough to run Pro Tools LE with it?
You know, with maximum of audiotracks and instrument tracks with the software synths, plugins and so on.
Can it handle heavy audio processing?

I have no problems with mine. I always freeze the instrument tracks though, but I have been mixing sessions with 40+ audio tracks with all sorts of plugin's without problems :)

I'd say the answer is yes and no. It depends on how 'much' you need. I am running PTM and PTLE on MacBook Pro's - They work for some of my projects - mostly post and small format recordings (4 to 6 tracks in at a time). I do large format orchestra recording for NPR - I need typically 16 tracks in at one time - PT on my Mac Books won't do that. So the MBP with a digi or M-A interface works great for the right sized projects.

I'd suspect that if you need a lot of plugs and tracks - you'll begin to find ways of working within the power available to you. PTLE can do a lot. Your job as the engineer is to learn it's boundaries and become creative with the tool.

I use Pro Tools, Samplitude, Sonar and Reaper and other tools in my work. I am always learning what can and can't be done on each. In fact, I am preparing for a 14 to 16 channel live orchestra recording this week - I will be using a Mac Book Pro - but running BootCamp XP32 with Samplitude. I don't have an on-location interface for PT with 16 ins. I will post that project in Pro Tools when we return to the studio. Again PT on my MB is perfect for that.

You'll be fine... might have to make some compromises at the end of your sessions when it's runing full blown with VIs and tons of track, but for most projects you'll be good...

Are you recording to an external FW drive, sixteen tracks at once should be easy?

My MacBook Pros rocks for PTLE. The wall you may run up against is with VI's. I don't' use too many but usually end up with Strike, a couple Hybrids, and even an Xpand or 2. Add to that 20+ tracks of audio with at least an EQ on each channel, probably a compressor on most, and various other plugs used as needed. I've yet to max it out. I am diligent about making sure I have compatible plugs, and all my VI's are Digi ones. That seems to help.

Macbookpro here with live rec at 32buffer, 16-18 tracks recording, with a few plugins in the headphone mixes, absolutely flawless.

Same situation as most above. MBP, PT8 LE, 20 tracks +. I'm smiling.
