Default V2.0 Spill Zones

Hi guys,

Loving V2.0 here, I found a workflow that is really great for what I do - here it is:

1. I create a layout of just my VCA masters for separate groups (eq. Drums, Bass, Vocals, Guitars, Synths etc).
2. I hide the VCA masters in the edit window so they don't take up screen real estate.
3. I define 1 spill zone as the whole surface, the one that I choose to spill VCA's to.
4. Choose the preference that attentioning a VCA automatically spills
5. Choose the preference that Menu button LED's light and collapse the spill.

Now, I just have my VCA layout open as my main layout. Whenever I hit attention on one of the VCA's it spills across the whole surface, and the VCA master itself is on the attention fader. I just hit menu on any channel to collapse the spill back to my VCA layout. Perfect! So fast to navigate the session, and I don't have to have the VCA channels even visible on my edit window.

I've also created other layouts for Bus Masters and Stems so I can also keep them hidden from the edit window, but easily accessible on the surface.

I experimented with the expand spill zones, but I didn't really like having the knob modules unusable in the conventional way for the channel strips so I turned it off. Is there something I'm missing here? Can you un-spill the expand zones somehow?

How are you guys finding 2.0? Any good tricks?

Forgot to add, one of the best things about this workflow is that theoretically if you create a mix template you can store your VCA, Bus and Stem layouts in the template so you don't have to set it up every time you do a mix.

I haven't tried it yet but seriously hoping it works that way!

:)

No way to collapse a expand zone, unfortunately.

Love hearing other people share their workflow. Thank you for taking the time to write that up.

I just got home from vacation. Looking forward to getting 2.0 loaded and following your workflow.

Hi,

Not sure if you saw my blog post about how myself and a couple of other Avid specialists envision using the zones:

Thanks,
Tom

I just dove into v2, and before reading you post in detail, just came up with the same workflow. The only difference is I don't hide my VCAs from the edit screen. I like having them there. Each one is before the tracks they control, so the volume automation line creates a visual break between track categories.

An additional trick I just noticed with this workflow, is that I'm able to use the master module Meter or Track Scrollers to instantly switch to a different spilled VCA group without having to exit to the VCA tracks and spill again. Do this:

1. follow your workflow above to set up a VCA layout and single spill zone.
2. while in layout mode for your VCAs, attention one of the VCAs to expand into the spill zone- the the Track and Meter Scrollers on the touch screen still show the VCAs instead of the spilled tracks
3. tap the touchscreen to select a different VCA- the the spill zone switches to the next VCA's slaves.

Great idea Lucien! I'm loving how quickly I can navigate around the mix like this. :)

I just updated my layout to include my master and stem record tracks. That displays their meters at the top of the touch screen and the bottom track scroller gives easy access to PEC style switching and record toggles. Using this workflow, I could be spilled on the faders changing details of a track and still quickly throw a stem into record from the touchscreen.

Fun!

I just wish the Meter Scroller had the option of independent layouts. It would be nice to assign it to my master and stem tracks and not worry about it changing with different layouts.
