Default Issue with Firewire 800 drive

Hello
(1.5ghz brand new powerbook, Tiger, mpowered 6.8r2, firewire 410, LaCie 160g external FW400/FW800/USB2 drive)

Is there a known issue with using the Firewire 800 port for your external session drive?
It sure went crazy on me. PT basically refused to operate, citing CPU strain, and crashed alot. Then by chance I tried the USB port (got a dual mode drive thankfully) and it works OK. But I don't want to keep it on the USB port, need it for other things.
One of the reason i bought this machine is to use the 800 port, I'm a little pissed!

I found some other complaints on this forum about the FW800 problems, but they seems to be limited to Panther.

Anyone else? Digidesign?

In other news, there seems to be some serious CPU issues in general (maybe Tiger is too fat?) because all my rewired sessions with Reason just halt playback due to CPU issues, regardless of how i connect my drive. Some links to basic advice on how to slim the system would also be appreciated.

thanks!

Default Re: Issue with Firewire 800 drive

Hi, I had the exact same issue as you, made alot of calls and finally got it sorted. Basically, the Firewire 800 drives seem incompatible with MP 6.8r2. Dunno why. We tried recording to the computers system drive and it worked fine. Now I'm using a Hardbox 200 Gig Firewire 400 drive and it works perfectly - no complaints at all. Hope that helps you out. Like you I bought my powerbook for the 800 port, but really haven't seen any noticable performance penalty using the 400 port.
